Are you talking about getting some 18/21" wheels and tires or ust looking for some 17" off-road tires? I think Pirelli makes something like the MT-21 for 17" wheels.

After a lot of searching for the same thing, I put on Avon Distanzia Supermotos; they are NOT dirt tires.
Good on gravel or dry ground & rock, but still very treacherous in wet ruts.

ya, I'm looking for my 17" rims. It sucks trying to find them. Actually a dealership recommended the Distanzia. I think i will steer clear of those unless i can't find anything else. the MT 60's don't look too bad.

 

I've seen pics of a rear TKC (17") used on the front.

 

I just saw this thread and maybe I can help, a little. If I'm not too late.

I ride in WV and I have a 2006 drz 400 SM. Like you, I wanted to be able to take the bike OFF road when the urge strikes (there are TONS of fire roads and trails shooting off the county roads around here).

After doing a fair amount of research, I bought the Pirellie MT 60's, front and rear. I've probably done about 200 miles since I put them on and here's my take:

They do darn well on the pavement (I've hucked it into some turns pretty firmly and so far, no near death experiences). On dry dirt, they are pretty good. In mud they SUCK. Oh, on WET pavement, they are damn good.

If you come up with a really good tire for your SM 17" wheels, PLEASE post it here so I can tag along. I gotta say, I'm happy with the Pirelli's, but I'm super careful about riding in off road wet conditions (I don't drop down a wash or creek bed that I'm not 100% sure I can get out of).

Check those out. I did some research about it and you can use the "rear" type on the front. Just have to have the directional part going the right way.
130/80/17 should fit the front. 150/70/17 should fit the back. (on an SM model anyways)
