Yea this may have been talked about before. I wanting to start doing some supermoto racing and was trying to keep the coast down, found a cr 250 2 stroke does anyone race any two strokes, I live in Georgia and will be riding it at middle kart track in Dublin GA, and Jennings GP fl. Any info would be great. Can the 250 stick with a 450 on the track. Or should i just go with a 4 stroke.

I've never run a smoker on the track. But I've raced against a few. They seem to be very 'abrupt' in everything they do. That might be a drawback as faster times come from being smooth. Running out of powerband, while the 4 strokes keep pulling, might get frustrating. Benefits would be weight and maintenance.

The 4 strokes build power so fast and so well now-a-days, that 2 strokes don't have the advantage they used to. There will be places that a CR250 would be strong, but over-all it will not hang with a 450.

But...where do you 'want to be' with the bike? Competitive racer? Track day fun? MGKT would not be too bad with a smoker, but(and I've never been there)Jennings is supposed to be a longer faster layout and would present issues from what I'm told.

If you have equal opportunities on a 2 stroke and 4 stroke, I would recommend the 4. Do you have a sweet deal on the CR?

Can you even race a 2t against a 4?

2t is not gonna have ANY compression braking... So backing it in will be damn hard.
It will rev higher, and use more fuel. And it'll be lighter.

4, torque, nice power build say coming off a turn. Lower maint depending on what you use.

Yeah some 4's may build or be as powerful as a 2t, but you have to maintain the piss out of them... To. But for racing that's a given.

A 250 smoker can be competitive...gearing is critical other wise the 4 stroke torque will pull you just coming out of the turns. As for backing it in its not necessary to get the bike sideways to turn it but it will back in slightly.

I don't understand the 2t requires more maintnence.?.? A cr 250 would be a very economical for entering sumo racing. Check class rules at MGKT the 250 2t may be legal in other classes than 450. I just put a new Wiesco piston and rings in my RM250 and it cost me $147. Try to rebild a 450 for that...

Yup, a 250 two smoke will have less maintenance then a 450 four stroke. Your looking at a top end ever year, bottom end every few years.

Why not get a used SM? They can be found as people upgrade their bikes!

Then, there's no need to get wheels, suspension, sliders, etc...

Unless you really love 2 strokes and just want something different, but if you're looking to get in cheap, used is the way to go.

I just finished building a 1999 cr250r with 16.5 excel in the front and a 17x5 in the back with Brembo Radial master and Caliper with a 320mm rotor on 2006 KTM SMR forks with Custom ProTaper triples. The engine is stock with the exception of a FMF Fatty pipe and shorty silencer. It makes amazing power! It would easily smoke my 98 Husky 610. I just weighed it with all fluids it is 210 lbs!!! READY FOR THE BEST PART??? IT'S PLATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ditto... I'm thinking the same thing... I want a 2stroke so bad!

I was even looking at the cr250 supermoto thread but hardly anyones posted in it. :-(

I want a hell raiser so bad! Are the powerbands as hard as a 500? I'd actually rather have the 250 if it was...

Guys, I totally goofed this... What I meant was, is a 250 MORE broad than the peaky 500?

I know the 250 will have less power... But if it's easier to live with, I rather have the 250 for the inner city/ back roads riding I do.

If they have the same "lightswitch" powerband, :D then guess which one I rather have:D

Sorry about asking this, but I have no idea what terms to search for to find this out. And dirt is one thing, street riding is another...

EDIT: And can you mellow out a 500's PBand?

The power band on the 250 takes about a day or two to get used to then its easy as pie!

what kinda range you get, and do you have an extended range tank on it?

2strokes can be competitive...it is mostly about the rider. I never raced my RM85 but I took it to a few track days and beat the pants off of 150's...the better riders beat me. They were on a kx 65 (proves ability wins) and a 150f (ridden by pro sm racer Jason Conlon)

go for it

I started off on a kx 125 in 2003, it was the best thing I could have done. It taught me to control the bike when the power came on. It did hurt a little in the tight corners but that taught me to carry my speed. When we needed more power we went to alcohol. That was fun. just get out there and have some fun and don't be discouraged with the bike.

you can mellow out the power band on any 2 stroke by using a flywheel weight. It will make the bike much less peaky and easier to ride in the slow stuff!

A couple of our B, A, and AA class enduro/hare scramble riders have had great success with flywheel weights in their CR250's. Our woods are tight, rocky, and usually have some steep hills and swampy sections. The weights seem to make the power much more tractable.

Never raced, but I've ridden my dad's YZ250 that I converted on a kart track and it was a lot of fun! I'm not the fastest guy on any bike, so I was getting my doors blown off by the better riders, but it wasn't the bike's fault. 4t is definately easier to ride, but I had a lot of fun on the 2t. So much fun, that I am probably going to pick up a YZ250 for myself because I have wheels that will fit it. Or I may shitcan the idea and get another KTM, who knows!

I ride my KTM 300 smoker on the street a lot and it is fun. It's more of a momentum bike once you break 70mph though. They may be ~55hp, but it's thrown down a hell of a lot different than a 4 stroke. I have it geared so it isn't screaming at 55, so the gears are spaced out more than they probably should be. Wouldn't be a problem on a kart track with 14-47ish gearing.

You're not saying your KTM 300 has 55hp, are you?

That's another thing weighing on my mind,,, is a KTM 2t... There's a cheap 360 here, but I can't find A THING for it... So I'm just thinking to get a more modern 250, 300 or 380. But then I hear as they go up in cc's they pull like tractors, and not so much top-end... So then I'm back to a CR:D

Fawk, I don't know...

I've seen figures of 52-58hp quoted, with several actual dyno run figures that fall within that range. While I haven't dyno'd my actual bike yet, I'd imagine it falls somewhere in there. The more I get into the bike, the more I realize that it isn't completely stock. Won't know exactly what has been done until I rebuild it in 2 months. So yeah, AROUND 55 hp isn't exactly a stretch. If you think it's less, that's fine by me, I don't really care.

tbh i havent read the comments from the others but i can report you on our experience with a 380 in swiss supermotard championship (open class)

the most important thing i want to point out at the beginning: its all about the rider. DOT.

an endless amount of people have told us something like: 450s, 480s etc are faster in corners and have same power on the straight. so why using a two stroke.

i think most of them have never moved a 2stroke really fast and they just repeat things parrot-fashion. true to the motto: the champ rides a 450, so that MUST be the best bike

what our experience is (which can be evidenced by videos): we have at least same cornerspeed (but we ride the bike little different than the 4strokes e.g a slightly different line). and NO bike out-accelerates us, it is 100% the other way round. with the 380 you make meter after meter on every straight out of the corner. (with original 380 engine)

at the beginning of the season we had a pumped engine (14 HP more than standard) but due to technical problems we replaced the engine with the original 380 engine.

our rider is in his 2nd supermoto season (first season was with a pumped 450). he says that "he does not think that he can go faster with a any 4stroke".

we received 6th rank in the first race (40 competitors, very wet conditions). in the second race we received a 4th rank in run 1 (but crashed in run 2 and 3 - shot down by other riders...)

we are VERY happy with the result as we have 12 year old engine and BY FAR the lowest budget of the whole racers.

the bike is tire-saving and maintenance is low.

having questions? let me know..

i will edit this comment later to bring in some pictures or a vid maybe.

I would love a smoker class in STTARS!!!! that would be FUN!!
