You won't need a different carb slide to delete the throttle stop, you just need to shorten the throttle stop/needle retainer screw (long hex post) or replace it with a screw that will fit.

There is a "screw set" (p/n 16029-MEB-671) listed in the RonAyers.com parts diagram for the FCR carb on a 2003 Honda CRF450R which works just right. It was ~$7 for the screw/spring/washer set at my local Honda dealer's parts counter (of course, they had to order it-- nobody keeps nuthin' in stock in my area, it seems). Simply remove the OEM throttle stop from the top of the slide, and replace it with the "screw set".

Hope that helps,

Bryan

opened up the carb last night, the throttle stop had already been removed.

Correct way to remove the 625 SMC tank

This is a stupid question, but one that I should've researched first-- and it doesn't deserve a new thread.

The previous owner of my '05 625 SMC had a custom rear subframe made for the bike. When I went to disassemble the bike and do some maintenance and service I found that a bolt appeared to be holding down the gas tank. It seemed easy enough to throw a socket onto my wrench and screw it off in order to remove the tank. However, when I did this the the bolt snapped off. It turns out the guy who made the subframe just tack welded a bolt with a nut on the end to the subframe to hold the gas tank in place.

So, my question is, on the factory subframe, does this same bolt unscrew? What is the correct way to remove and install the gas tank? Should it just lift off?

There's a stud that's fastened to the subframe crossbar that sticks up through the tank's rear mount. The tank is held on by a special long cylindrical nut that screws down onto the stud, with a steel and a rubber washer to reduce transferred vibes. To repair the rear mount, you should be able to drill out the remains of the broken bolt, and replace it with a new bolt w/ lock nuts to keep it in place, or have it welded back. Check the MunnRacing.com OEM parts fiche for a diagram of what the frame mount looks like.

To remove the tank, I undo and remove the tank fairings, remove the rear nut, lift the rear of the tank a bit and slide the tank to the rear and up to disengage if from the rubber pucks at the front of the tank.

Hope that helps.

Okay, so the rear nut on the factory subframe is supposed to be screwed off, or at least loosened to remove the tank. I feel less like an idiot for breaking the stud on my subframe. The previous owner did give me the OEM subframe a long with a bunch of other parts to take it back to stock if I wanted to. I'm debating which direction I want to go at this time.

Thanks for your help.

right guys ive just bought me an immaculate condition ktm sxc 625 2005 i have had a look in the carb and the bolt in the top of the slide is not restricting the oppening at all but doesnt look filed/chopped down also i have had a look to find the sas (secondary air system) but cant see it.. my question is do these bikes come as restricted/choked up as the smc models?

Along with all these basic mods I have done the the Sprocket change. FYI the 05 and 06 already have a 16T in the front. Get the KTM orange rear 42T and you can still use the same chain still, if you are running something other than an 04.

Most of these mods are cheap as hell if anything at all. basically you can buy a JD Jet kit and do all of them. JD Jet kit is super easy and comes with VERY good instructions.
What's a good source for the sprocket? Is the OEM KTM sprocket aluminum?

Stock Gearing Sprockets and Chain

Just got off the phone with The Man at Munns. He says stock sprocket gearing for a 2005 625SMC is 16/38. Others in this thread have said it is 16/40 and 17/40.

I don't have my bike in front of me, so I thought I'd ask someone with stock parts to count the teeth so we can have an actual no-shit number to work from. I'd hate to order parts and get the gearing all screwed up and have to go through the return process (not to mention the install/destall routine twice).

I thought Munns would be the best place since they seem to be knowledgable, but the numbers the guy gave me diddn't jibe with what I read here.

BTW: the duyde at Munns sounds just like Ron White. LOL>

BTW2: Cycle Gear is having a great online sale on tires. I bought a set of Dunlops (Road Smart II) for like 60% off.

EDIT: THe dudes at munns were great. they didn't mind my ignorance, and were all business. Went with the 16/40 just as a middle-of-the-road setup. Whatever. Not looking to race. That x-ring chanin is spendy. $250.00 for two sprockets and a chain. Better last forever!!!!!

UPDATE: Checked the actual bike: 17/40 stock on my '05.

Ran it around the village last night. Rainy and cold, and that bald-arse rear tire was sliding around like a Labrador across the kitchen floor. Frightening. Hope my new tires arrive soon. Yeeks.

HELP - i need a 2005 SMC wiring diagram.

My speedo broke (cheap plastic mounting posts) and I want to just stick a Garmin in that position but I need a good, switched 12v power wire in the forward harness area. Anyone got a wiring diagram or a pic of which wire is suitable?

Also, anyone done that - stuck a GPS as a speedo? I use one on my Kawasaki touring bike and I love it.

XOXO

i don't have a wiring diagram, but why did you opt to not get a new dash? like a vapor?

Because I like the GPS thing, with maps as well as a speedo. And, mostly, because I already have a spare Garmin laying in the garage, so it seems a no-brainer, which, you know, is synergistic with the whole sumo hooligan mindset. Actually, I have been riding sans speedo, which is mad hoolie, but awkward without traffic to judge my speed by.

I am an old dude, and I only ride like an hour at a pop. The SMC is a pure toy, like having an Xbox or something, and I already have (like many others) sunk WAY too much money into it.

I really don't need advice to find a hot 12v wire. I have a SImpson and I can just poke around. But I thought it would be good to throw the question out to see what others have learned and done.

Thx

Hey could someone help me buy one?

I am in the Bay area of california and I'm looking to buy one of these bikes. I don't know enough about them yet to negotiate and inspect the bike I am trying to purchase.

Is anyone on here in the vicinity of San Francisco who would like a free lunch on me and a cool ride to and through sf? I have another bike that I would be driving to the location. =]

Would love the help thanks.

After getting my bike back from it being stolen I worked on a little tail light clean up on my 05 last weekend, not finished but here's some pics of where it's at so far, also relocated my license plate. Also working on removing the battery and starter. Already removed starter and now trying to find a capacitor to use in place of the battery.

Whitedog, Glad to hear you recovered your SMC....

I like what you've done with the tail. I did a mod similar to your initial mod. Moving the taillight under the tail and shortening the cans looks good!

I may have to get out the sawzall over the winter....
