Hi there, need some help, i have a 2005 CRF450X and i think is strange how low is the top speed of the bike.
She does the same top speed with 14-51(enduro wheels) and 13-42 (17' SM wheels), is this normal?
The bike have stock exhaust and 170 main jet and cutted airbox.
Any idea why the bike is so flat at top end?
Here is a video of the bike accelarating to the top speed.
Thank You ;)

Hey Super Dave, i dont have idea what is the needle in the carb. What is the sprockets you are using and wich is the top speed you get.
I think that my top end power is very flat. Do you use stock exhaust ?

I've been playing with gearing commander and your speeds are about on the high end of what you should expect.

http://www.gearingcommander.com/

Check the gear ratios as your bike has not been verified.
Wanna go faster?
Big bore, porting, cam, REM Isotropic micropolishing, even chain selection will have an effect...
It's only money

I just think is strange because the engine looks like is not at is full rpm or near. I wanted a little more top speed to have a better cruise speed. I do 200 miles rides and would be healthier to the engine.

In my opinion it Has nothing to do with carb or air flow, your gearing is the issue. I wouldn't pull the screen... It's a backfire prevention..
Bump your front sprocket to a 15 and you will reach higher top speed which is better for your engine at that kind of speed.

13-42 you should be around 7880rpm at 85.5mph.. which is way to freaking high rmp for a distance. You're gonna kill that poor single cylinder.

15-42 would be closer 6800 rpm at 86 mph.. You're gonna start seeing clutch wear also.. that's starting to be really tall starting at a stop.

And btw its a supermoto.. Freeway? really? haha I mean we all have different use of our bikes but supermoto isn't about tight turns? wheelies? quick accel..
In my mind, If you want to go fast get a street bike.. this thing has 1 cylinder, and hearing your bike it seems to perform really awesome..

I run 14-45 in mine and it's great. I don't do any street with my current bike but the 450x saw plenty, I ran the same 14-45 and was pleased. But Id never step on a freeway on a dirt bike.. It's really not meant to stand that kind of rpm for an extended period.. think about those little tiny valves beating the seats.. that little ass piston revving at 7-8k.. I;m all about reliability and doing head on a honda is common regardless if you have ss valves..
Hope you play with your gearing and find a happy place.

I just used the freeway to test the top speed, if you see my videos you will see i am not a freeway guy, the only time i hitted the revlimiter with this bike was in this video in the 4rd gear, i mainly ride twistie/mountain roads and in the straights i am not at full gas for extended periods of time.
I have been with the 14-42 and was not fun enough for me, with the 13-42 i have more wheelie power and same top speed, i know i have higher rpms, but in twisties you dont reach 80miles too often.
Your 14-45 is 0.5% higher RPM then my 13-42 .
I will remove the screen when i get a aftermarket exhaust or a CRF450R one, but will buy a fire proof one.

Hard to tell, but that's pretty respectable for sitting basically upright.
You'd probably get another 5mph with a full tuck and tailored leathers.

Also, you are losing a fair amount of power and destroying your chain with that 13t front sprocket.

Not a Honda, but I switched to 17/47 on my bike, but not for less chain friction.
It was so I could use the same chain for the dirt setup with a 15/48 gearing.

I wasn't suggesting you to run 14-45, I was making a comparison. I do suggest you bump to at least a 14 in the front for the same reason 'idle' has explained.
Change your rear to make up for the 14 in the front.
Opening the exhaust will help with power delivery, more flow, might get a bit better accel. You might need to revise your jetting if you open up the exhaust. needle movement
might be enough

Good luck and have fun!

Thank you for the help. In the near future i will get the 14 in front, at rear i have the 42, with a 45 maybe will do the trick. I will update this post once i get the mods.
Any idea of the best air filter to use?

Try 16/42.
I don't believe a 16 fits on a honda.. machining is required with a 15. At that point simply go down on your rear.. but that's excessive imo. You're gonna slip the clutch a lot to get going from a stop.

As for k&n, I don't support any of their filters in any application. Coming from the car industry, I have seen many physical tests showing how bad they filter, more flow maybe but it also shows how much crap and big particles it allows your engine to suck it.
I would simply get a new filter and oil it well.
