I have a Honda manual but I think the Hanes manual is better. :hmmm:
Valve adjustment is simple.Remove the gas tank, remove the inspection plugs from head, remove crank plugs on left side of bike.Turn counter clockwise until the T lines up with the groove. If you go past the T do not back it up.Go all the way around again. If you do not the right valves will be off.Adjust valves and you are done.I use the go no go method.

anything i should worry or pay special attention to on this bike?
Nothing to *worry* about, but some things to stay on top of:

1) The oil. Check it before every ride and check it properly (it's not unusual for these bikes to use some oil even when they run perfectly and don't show visible leakage or smoking)... ie: let the motor warm up for at least five minutes at idle. Turn it off. Wait a minute or so. While waiting, unscrew the dipstick and wipe it off. Then hold the bike in a vertical position (not on the sidestand) and stick the dipstick back in the hole. Don't screw it in, just put it in until it's as far in as it will go without screwing it in. Pull it back out and read the level. If it's low, add oil up to the full mark, no higher. If it's high, it will blow oil out of the breather into your airbox.

2) Change the oil and filter regularly. I do mine every 1500 miles.

3) Check the valve clearances at the same interval as the oil/filter change.

Other than that, it's just normal mc maintenance. Ride the shit out of it and enjoy!!

BTW, since you are in the Bay Area, I'd be glad to show you how to do the oil change and valve adjust. I have done it so many times (I have 33K on my XR650L) that it only takes me about 1/2 hour for the whole thing. Of course it'll take longer with me showing you and explaining...
