This chunk of metal has been on one of my front spokes since I bought the bike.
Does anyone know what it's there for? So far I'm considering if it's a weight for balancing tires (seems like a real half-ass job if so) or could it be on there to hold a damaged spoke in place?

Should I be worried or is this something common? I haven't noticed any scary vibrations or shakes when riding so I'm leaving it alone for now

They shouldn't move around, they're split like that so they can be "Crimped" onto the spoke head.

those don't look like shit, my fishing weights melted on with a map torche look like shit !

but mannnnnn does it smooth out a knobbie :D

you can always balance them yourself on the axle with two 5 gallon buckets. the rim-stickin lead weights will work fine for street tires. prolly won't need much weight either.

i have a mold for lead weights i cobbled up out of an old trophy base (marble/granite) and it works great. dualsporting drz's rip off weights in the woods like a hookers pants.
