Has anyone gotten an SMR plated in California? For that matter could anyone who has gotten a CA plate for an offroad bike give some pointers?

You gotta check to see if the vin # has a 3 or a c in the eighth place, if it does the dmv won't let it through .Start there

I have no experience, but I don't think it will happen. When they enter the vin into their computer, it tells the computer it is an off-road only bike.
No , they go by if it is acceptable by the vin to get a plate . It is just someones moronic way to thin the heard of bike being able to legaly get a plate , this went into affect in 2004. Before that you could plate just about anything. Just about every bike except ktms come from the factory with an offroad only emissions sticker. My emmisions stickers accidentally got washed off so they had to go by the vin. If dmv see those stickers it red flags it . NOT red sticker! Just won't go any further into getting a plate. It is stupid alot of factory plated bikes have way worse emmisions than most supermotos.

if it helps, my 06 ktm smr has an "X" for the 9th place. the ktm does NOT have "offroad use only" on the title or mso.

unless its the 8th place from the front, and that is a 3 on my vin number.

yeah whupss sorry I meant the eighth place ,, it's been a while. I think the ktms not plated from the factory are the only exception cause I think they have a on highway emissions sticker which helps.

The 8th position of the VIN is the key.

A 'C' or a '3' in the 8th position denotes competition only model and is often the kiss of death for street registration, at least in Kalifornia.

Somehow someway some folks get their C/3 VIN bikes street registered in their state. There is no one magic formula, it takes some digging around by the owner.
