My 540 SXS/ SMR

It started out as a 560 SMR but dropped a valve; smashed the head and bent the rod so the previous owner replaced the motor with a 540 SXS engine. The mods are as follows:

2008 subframe and bodywork
GDS triple clamps
Factory 2 stage ignition
Beringer radial m/c, caliper and disc
Excel rims on KTM polished hubs (16.5 front)
2 piece clutch cover
Titanium rear spring
Remote hot start
Full ti akra
JD jetting kit
KTM slipper
Dev Tech swingarm

Still to go on:

Works style numberboard
Graphics
K&N
Ti footpegs
Stepped seat
Carbon tank protectors
Chain
Carbon end can
New handguards

I'll bang some more pics up when it's done.

It's just about done now, took it out for the 1st time a couple of weeks ago and it flies.

Still need to powdercoat the frame, not sure whether to do the swingarm at the same time :hmmm:

1) Picts should be around 640 x 480 or the next range up max. (too big stretchs the page we are viewing at this moment

2)Picts should be somewhere easy to get to, desktop or My picts

3)After you hit "reply" type in your message

4)scroll down to manage attachments
hit "browse"
5)click on the area of your computer where the pict reside

6)pick a picture then hit "open"

7)now hit "upload"

when you are all done then hit "reply...."
once you are there acouple times its actually quite easy...I may made it quite wordy...

Chris is workin on the picts issue.....with bikes and babes and all those different sections with huge attachments it eats up our resources...
I'll call ya when I head home...

the triple clamps are one of the first mods anyone should do. that and the shortened swingarm really help the bike get that 250 feel.. makes it nimble... i just scored some alpinas off of a race bike that have a hardened lip. they are 5.5 and 16.5 front. i do have a set of black excel wheels with a 16.5 front and 5 rear for sale for 500 bucks no tires

#17 ·
Yes, the 14mm offset is getting it more towards 250 / sportbike geometry. An offset of about 6mm is getting to Super Single territory really (for an SMR at least). But I am not sure that it is more 'nimble' in the sense that increasing trail like that makes it more stable at high speed, but increases turning effort and radius at slow speeds. You couldn't race a 250 on a typical tight supermoto track. But on a big track it might help.

That is my opinion of course...

here are a few pics i just tore it down to go to a textured black on frame, subframe, and swingarm. they are also powdercoating the stator cover, water pump cover, and the clutch cover.

thanks for helping me with the pics guys.

i tried the photos but i think they are to big guys. i don't know what im doing with this stuff sorry. ill try to get them up or check out my photos at supermotosmugmug.com sonoma im number 151

Yeah, getting the wording right is difficult.

With a lot of trail, a bike will be super stable at high speed. But at slow speed (tight track), the bike will be hard to turn and tend to run wide.

With too little trail, it will turn very quickly at low speed, like a MX bike. But at high speed, the front will wobble and be very dangerous.

A higher offset will decrease trail

A lower offset will increase trail.

So going from 18mm to 14mm will increase trail, increase high speed stability. But at lower speed on a tight track, the bike will be harder to turn and be harder to keep on the tight inside line.

All of the beauty is on the inside of the motor :D

• KTM Hardparts/Adler slipper clutch
• Cycra ProBend handguards
• Crankcase breather catch can
• JE 13.5:1 piston
• KTM 833 camshaft
• Dave Hopkins head work including oversized stainless steel valves, porting, polished intake and exhaust tracts, combustion chamber
• FMF Ti 4.1 full exhaust system
• KTM Hardparts vented airbox cover
• JD Jetting jet kit
• Michelin intermediate/soft front and soft rear tire
• Stealth fork bleeders, fuel mixture screw
• G2 Ergonomics throttle tube cam system (custom)
• ProCircuit launch control

there seems to be different school of thought about valve sizes...are you happy with oversized S/S ones....I'm ready to crack the head of the bike and do the finishing touches...

what ya runnin for fuel....?

#36 ·
I was perfectly happy with the oversized stainless valves. The RFS motor wasn't designed to run at sustained rpms. At Miller we were seeing 11,300 rpm at the most and valve float just wasn't an issue. That motor is so strong from 1/2 to 3/4 throttle and we decided to run an engine package that utilized the RFS motor's strong area. I guess I changed my traditional train of thought about having the power in the high rpms and built the motor more in the meat of the powerband. The KTM 833 cam was great for the power in the latter half of the powerband whereas the 806 did great for low end work. With the 13.5:1 JE piston we ran 110 leaded Sunoco race gas (or VP if we had to, but that stuff is quite pungent!).

My 2006 560 SMR

Not as sweet as the SMR's I've already seen in this thread but I have been working on it. Mine is street legal with Leo Vince slip on, DRC Edge II Tail, EXC Headlight, APA Mirror, Acerbis handguards, Black Behr Wheels with Rimstripes, Black fork protectors, Black Fenders. I painted 2 stripes on the rear fender but the paint isn't holding well. I should have sanded the fender first . Was thinking of black powdercoating the swingarm. What do you guys think? I'm not pleased with the look yet.
