there are aftermarket tanks for the "S" models which is the same for the SM but make sure and ask for details because some things from the " E " and " S " cannot be interchangeable from certain manufacturers.....

I dunno i would just rather have a plastic tank, do you know if a plastic tank from a drz400 will swap with a drz400sm?
ims fits on DRZ400s need to modify the seat bracket i think and you lose the fan(i replaced mine with two computer fans and a switch so i can run them whenever i want)

With clarke you might be lucky and keep your fan.

my california emissions legal MZ has a plastic tank, and plastic covers.

almost every new car/truck sold in the usa today has a plastic fuel tank.

the KTM's have plastic tanks.

I don't know why suzuki still uses a metal tank.

yep tank covers! cbr1000rr good example of just that...only crap thing is that you can't use a magnetic tank bag on it. Don't really matter much, since I got my 400sm in april...only rode that sportbike once...not real enjoyable either. SM !!!!!

... but at least it won't deteriorate over time and succomb to the fuel vapor.
What do you mean by that? Dirt bikes have plastic tanks and mine has never "succomb to the fuel vapor". Gas can are made of plastic and I don't think I have ever seen one leak because of deterioration.

The bad think about the DRZ tank is that the graphics are painted on. Changing graphics would have to overlay. Plus if you crash it you now have a dented tank. I have dumped my dirtbike plenty of times and never dented a plastic tank. I am looking for a black plastic tank for my DRZ.
