does it crank but not fire?

theres a common problem on these, the CDI units go out.

when its cranking, does the tach bounce around, or does it stay completely still?

#4 ·
It bounce a little. I seen a video of a good cdi it does that. Now here a question with that is going to bounce each time the engine does a rev? Or is ment to bounce and stay up until you let off the starter?

It has spark. It gets fuel in carb, Seems to have compersion. I can get it kicking with the carb removed but once the carb gets put on I get nothing..... I took the plug out and look to wet fauled. I let it set out for a sec and the put the plug to to the engine block and it had a good spark. So I put the plug back in and got nothing....... Then I let it sit for about 1 hour and tried it agien and still nothing......

I have been talking here about the problem here:

What are some comman no start problems with these bikes????? I have no idea on why it will not start. I can usally get any thing running.

CDI problems are the only common thing...

are the jets in the carb correct? (38 slow jet, 138 main)

my NX250 has started down to ~10f, its been pretty good about that

DrexNX I have some good news I now have it running but throttle is vey slow at going down after reving.....

the problem was the PO had the wrong plug in it. Right plug now she runs but still need some carb help. It has slugish throttle so now thats my new problem.

Also the clutch is makeing some noise So i think I will need to look at that too... and I think valves need adj.

Well thinking about its not really poor throttle response but more of throttle hang up or slow throttle return. I will play with more when the suns out. I got it going at 8pm and had it running for about 2 or 3 min. I had it running without choke.

I think the valves might be out because there kind of loud. I will change the oil on wed. The oil is a little dark. It might explain the clutch sound tooo.

I'll be honest, the clutch on mine drags a bit and once its warmer I'll pull it apart and probably replace the metals.

slow throttle return? like the grip doesn't turn back or the rpms hang?

#12 ·
rpms hanging points to an inlet leak... check the rubber carb-head boot and the vac lines.

the bike is 20 years old at this point, rubber doesn't last that long.

could that also lead to hard starting too???? I still might have a cdi problem. I tried starting the bike before I cover it back up and it would not start (cold CDI). BUT I had brought the CDI inside and place it by a heater to warm it up. After haveing it warm I was then able to start the bike. I try this agien and see if works or not

#14 ·
yeah, it definitely could.

the cold CDI thing is odd, but definitely possible.

my turn signals don't work at all under 10f, and below 20f they don't click like they should.
its possible the relay in the CDI is sticking due to cold

well i have some more news. I can get the bike started with starting fluid. So it seems to be a carb problem. The bike seems not to getting gas. That might explain the higher reving because its leaning the bike out. I think the valves are in spec becasue she will pull the front well in about 4in in 1st and then when shift 2nd gear too. ( might be due to low air in rear tire)

Bad news is the bike is not cooling. It seems to be over heating. The cooling fan is kicking on. Also the light is on the dash when the bike is cold.

#16 ·
well... that light is from the cylinder head itself.

does it have coolant? is it frozen?

if its running super lean that could make a lot of heat as well.

I'd pour a ton of seafoam in the tank and try to get it going again.

#20 ·
lol, gooood luck with that...
measure the resistance and compare against what the service manual says.. maybe that sensor was bad?

#22 ·
you're one lucky mf'er

well, lucky right now, not lucky when you broke it

Nice tires on the first blue bike. What kind are they? I was looking for a nice NX650 but ended up scoring a 89 Honda Transalp for $1100 that is my winter project.

I'm pretty much done with the valves and overall carb and upper end comb through. I'm a bit particular. I'm doing a near restoration, even painting the little parts that are scuffed: shift and brake pedals and levers, luggage rack, kickstand...check it out since they are pretty much cousins!http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8876594#post8876594

Nice translap. I would love to have one but I could only find the nx 250.I used to a ride a Rm 250 and xr 200 but have sold them and then got a gsxr1100 but sold that after 1 year and got into Hawk gts. But I miss the dirt so I got this dual sport.

im lucky i got the 1/2 out of the engine. It broke clean off so I had pound a screw drive bit in there to get it out.

here some pics of the Hawk Gts
I have a couple of them :D The blue bike and red bikes are stock. The gray one is a track bike/tagged for street too but has a modded engine and suspension. Now I also have a project/parts bike but I have 3/4 of another hawk too......

Ok I clean the carbs agien. Put fresh gas in it agien. Now it runs ok. Still has the rev problem a little. Thinking about it might be air filter... but any way I got the seafoam and took the bike out on about 3 to 4 mile ride or so. It did ok just revving high and didnt have much top speed. But atleast its running

I've hit 95 on mine :bike:

(in full tuck, and it took a LOOOONG time to get from 85-95, but it did it  )

I can't remember if that was before or after I K&N'd and removed the cleanout cover/screwdrivered my muffler
