Hey, I've got a DRZ 450 and wanted to get the bike set-up for some gymkhana riding. What should I do as far as setup, suspension (softer/harder), tire pressures (higher/lower), etc...

for example this is what I'm talking about...

There's an M Gymkhana (http://m-gymkhana.com) event coming up in Feb. that I want to ride at and wanted to get a nice setup.

couldnt help you much with that other than i would think you would want a decent amount of pressure in the tires to make the bike VERY flickable. soft suspension with too much rebound sounds like a bad idea but too stiff and you may slide out. My biggest bitch would be that I ride with a foot out style and that is a NO NO for these competitions.

Tire pressure will be normal, but I think I'll soften up the suspension a little in the rear to help with drive out of the obstacles. The rebound I'll keep normal cause I don't want the thing bouncing all over the place because I'm gonna need the bike to turn. Maybe I'll raise the rear up to help the bike be more flickable though.

Hard to say how to adjust it. Ur weight and riding style/abilities will determine it. Lol only u can say what of ur current set up needs adjusting.

I'm gonna make a few changes and test them out over the weekend, I've got a free Saturday cause the wife is gone, so I can work it out then. I'll have a chance to rider it hard too. there's a lot close by that usually doesn't have a traffic on the weekends and the asphalt is in decent shape too.

check your pressure. drop it 2-3 lbs so they will heat up more. if that doesn't help with heat, drop a couple more lbs. find what feels good and record that as 'gk pressure' somewhere.

suspension? I like my forks raised in the triples about 3/4". it turns very quickly, and most folks can't stand how twitchy it is when they try mine. is a drz:s with mags, and I like it.

I wouldn't change the suspending pieces at all other than the triple heights.

I will suggest a gearing change though. the 'e' gearing of 14/47 works fantastically at gymkhana. the gp8 is a breeze when you only need heavy throttle, heavy brake, and no clutch work! I don't remember what my fastest was last year, but 29.468" comes to mind ;) and that's dog show compared to the FAST guys in Japan! :what::what::what:

bleed your brakes! fresh fluid! you'll cook the water and lock a piston doing this stuff if you're trying to be quick!

I'm rely happy to see your interest in gk. we have a lot of fun with smaller weekly events here in Birmingham, and put on 2-3 full blown deals yearly. the next will be in March.

wear your gear and rock out !

kickass ! invite some friends to ride with you. I have some patterns you're welcome to try out if you like. cut tennis balls in half for cones and you're ready to roll.

remember, as long as you don't wheelie or do burnouts, you can tell tithe cops its for skills/safety building... with a strait face

Thanks! I got in contact with them over at M Gymkhana and the guy sent me some practice patterns that have a little bit of everything to try on Sat. I'm really excited to try it out! It seems really fun! Definately the cops out here in Cali are all over anything with 2 wheels so the lot is pretty isolated so I'm sure I'll be okay.

keep in mind gymkhana is in its infancy here in the USA. it's success depends on YOU to organize small meets and build portfolios, friends, interest.

please don't shoot for the moon and go out looking for corporate sponsors just yet.... you will be disappointed when they don't understand that it's about making riders safer, more skilled, and satisfied by riding, instead of it being a race.

or, prove me wrong, and do it up nascar style. I'll still toss cones in my own back yard and love every minute of it.:)

I dont give a damn bout racing or anything anymore. I did all that and had sponsors to keep happy. I want something fun to do with my wife that she can enjoy as well...that doesnt break the bank in costs to attend. She doesnt mind kart tracks but doesnt like jumping...hates high speed gp tracks. I love riding middle GA but i gotta make that a 3day trip...too much. If i could find a parkinglot here that i wouldnt get arrested for riding i would. Last one i found we almost got charged with tresspassing...we werent even on the bikes just walking it and the bikes were on the trailer.

public schools are your property, use their lots when it's safe to do so.

any public property is yours to use. make it happen.
