Well I bit the bullet and put down deposit on those Marchesini bad boys!

R:5.0x17

I have waited a long time before ordering fat wheels, partly to heal my credit card, and also to weigh the options between forged wheels, wire wheels, and those new James Parker tubeless wire wheels.

Once they show up, I will let everyone know how they fit on my CR500AF, especially on the swingarm.

Well I guess I'll have to wait to see your bike down at the local hang. BTW, are you interested in running that racing series out at Stockholm? I'd like to give it a try. The first day may conflict with DCTC but I'm hoping to hit the June race.

Nice choice Keith  . Hopefully you wont have any clearance issues with it. I hate when I see the lip of the rear supermoto Marchesini all chewed up from the chain :headshake . Hey Dan, I bet you are getting the new radial Magura brake setup aren't you :Funny:

Swingarm width

Chrome,

I was on the Marchesini website and they have an MS Excel spreadsheet showing the fitments available, and for Honda the CRF450, CR250, XR400&650R are all available with the 5.0 rear rim.

Anyway, I measured the swingarm last night and it is almost 7-1/2 inches wide.
The rim will definitely fit, but it will be interesting to see how the offsets work out.
With a centered 5.0 inch rim, there is about 1-1/4 inch clearance each side, the chain takes up maybe 7/8 inch of width, so that leaves 1/2 inch for tire clearance, say a little more that 6.0 inch for tire width.

Now a 160x17 tire is 160mm wide = 6.3 inch. That sounds as if it won't fit! :headscrat

BUT, it seems the actual tire width varies from the stated width, check out this site for instance:
http://www.rattlebars.com/valkfaq/tirewear/
Of course that depends on the tire brand so it remains to be seen which tire I will get for the rear, cause offset is also part of the equation.

A little more can be had if the right spacer is shaved a bit and the left spacer is customed to a wider width, but that depends on the Marchesini hub offset doesn't it?

Hopefully some Junkie out there will put ruler to tire so that once the rims come and I know the offsets, I can get the tire and slip it on with no problems.

Whelp, I was given an estimated wait of 3-6 weeks for the wheels, so thats plenty of time to think about it...

I ordered a set of excels on talon hubs last week, 5 inch wide in the back, for my 97 cr500, i should have those within 2 weeks, ill let you know how those fit. I got them from east coast, and he said it should fit with the 160 wide in the rear, so all i can do is hope.

Yeah I really hope they fit for you Keith. The CRF that I saw them on (same swingarm as CR) had the side of the rim all chewed up because the chain was slapping against it. Hopefully you won't have that problem because you can't just make new spacers for the wheel since the sprocket and rotor have to remain aligned properly. It's a little easier with a spoked wheel since you can pull the rim to one side or the other.

Mine came in today and they look awesome, I believe I got the last set.

My only reservation was the fact that they were gold - They look pretty subdued though and I'll shoot some pics when it's done.

As far as tire and chain clearance is concerned the YZ we just fit a black pair to, has very good clearance with no chain marks on the tire at all. The offset for the sprocket seems very generous.

BTW, the prices of the Marchesini wheels has been increased, so expect to pay a little more when they do come in.

When they are universally available we plan to buy 10 sets and try to offer a discount to you Junkies.

Thats good to hear. From what I understand there was two sizes offered (5 and 5.5) the ones I saw had to be 5.5 because there was no clearance at all :headshake . Post a pic of them on your WR Mike

Should be ok...

Chrome,
If you go to the Marchesini site, they have the Excel spreadsheet and while they don't have a 5.5; but they do offer a 5.4 rear for the CRF450R, termed as a 'Special', presumably cause it will take modifying to work it in there....

You had a me a little worried for a sec!
Now all I have to worry about is the dollar vs. the euro...:hammer:

Can't get Marchesinis....

Well I guess this post should close the thread - I spoke with Jeff at ECW today and he said that after 4 months, Marchesini still has their head up thier a**. They gave him an additional 7 month lead time on the Honda CR/CRF wheels. He said he did get a batch of Yamaha wheels in but that was it.

You would also notice that Motostrano doesn't even list the wheels on thier site anymore; and lots of other places that advertise the wheels in Supermoto Racer don't even have them listed on thier sites either.

So, I decided to go with the XTAR wheels. I spoke with John the owner of Butterman tools and after checking some things out, I am going to buy a CRF set and see if they fit onto my CR500AF.

The advantage is that they have a cush drive built into the hubs!!! A minor disadvantage is that the hub design only allows for an equal 60 degree bolt spacing. The CR/CRF has a staggered spacing, so you have to use a Yamaha rotor with the hub.

That means I have a spare Braking StremX CR/CRF rotor that I have to unload....
