Does anyone have any thoughts or experience with Marchesini forged alum SM wheels? Lighter, stronger, etc than conventional wheels?

Here's the claims:

http://www.marchesiniwheels.com/ENG/Supermotard/

For more than 30 years, Marchesini has been the leading manufacturer of motorcycle wheels in Italy. Taking advantage of its market leading technology and experience in Forged Aluminium, Marchesini is proud to launch its new Supermotard wheel. The first company to offer an alternative to the commonly used spoke wheel. By integrating the wheel design used by the most successful teams in Moto GP and World Superbike championships and further timely geometric designs and research of special materials, Marchesini offers a new generation of wheels that overcomes the extreme demands required to improve SUPERMOTARD performance.

Results

The most notable results were found in terms of mass and inertia reduction, when compared to wheels currently on the market, the following average results were noticed.

* 110% improvement on rigidity.
* 15% weight reduction per set.
* 15% inertia reduction per set.

Advantages

* The increased rigidity of the wheel and the reduced weight and inertia remarkably improve the motorcycle's stability under braking, in tight curves and direction changes which are typical in SUPERMOTARD circuits.
* Due to the “spoke” design wheel/tyre temperatures reach optimum conditions earlier ensuring the best grip in all conditions.
* Tubeless technology and anti–puncture systems eliminate use of inner tubes.
* Spokes require no maintenance between races.
* Wheels are more easily installed and in most cases allow space for better brake systems.

Our Supermotard wheels have already been rigorously tested by major riders in international races with excellent results and encouraging remarks.

Thanks Keith. Now what about the unbiased non Marchesini "real world" version. From other threads I read here, seems that supply is the main problem.? Cost new looks to be close to Excel/Tallons?

Thanks,

Lee
I think they are a bit like those over priced tubeless kits, plus the rear is a 5.25 to wide for a 160-165 flattens out the profile to much
I am very 'close' to getting wheels and the Marchies are top on my list right now. I like the excel rims, but cost wise, it is a wash, with both running out in the same ballpark. I don't plan to race this year, so the bike will be just on the street, with no jumps.

The things I will be looking if I order the wheels, is if the 5 inch rear is really 5 inch, will the adapters go on with NO fuss, weight will be a secondary issue, though if I find someone to weigh them, you can bet I will.

So it then begs the question, how much does an excel combo weigh?

and if I order, I will let you guys know how long it takes, it may take a while since this is the 'parts ordering season' for racers...

I've been back to backing the March's over a traditional 5" spoked rear set...

The forged wheels are lighter by a couple of pounds and offer quicker acceleration - period.

The front was supposed to be a 16.5" and the rear a true 5" - When we finally got them delivered the front was a 17" (which helps with tire selection) and the rear a 5". The profile on the rear is 100% perfect with a 160 tire.

If it's worth anything I'd give them a two thumbs up - The cost is only marginally more than a regular set - they are supposed to be strong and they do offer a harsher landing when jumping (ridgidity) - I'm not a jumper so it won't bother me...

They look gorgeous too - I'll try and dig up a picture

whos bike is that? looks really cool.
The owner is Rob Mealey - He's going to be a new advertiser on this site, ChampionsOnline.com.

He owns four dealerships in Florida and has a real passion for Supermoto - I've been helping him set up the online store...

The bike is an '05 YZ450F - Stock with STM slipper and RaceTech suspension (firmed up and lowered 1"). It's very angry, especially with the March's on.

I just ordered a set too - The last pair the distributor had was a set of gold, if they look too bling, I'll anodize them black.

Has anyone out there mounted these onto an XR650R? I'm thinking of going with 3.5"x17 and 5.0"x17but I'm not sure if it'll work or if I'll have chain clearance issues.
160 rubber width?

Hey Mike, what is the brand, type of tire and width of your 160 profile?

I am taking measurements of my CR500AF tonight to see what the width between the swingarms are and I don't want to get a tire that is too wide...

The wheels work in 5" mode better than the 150 (in my opinion) The tire wall is less flared and my chained rubbed the 4.25 but doesn't rub the 5.00.

Better offset probably.

I just bought an 04' WR450 to take the place of my existing 03'. I haven't had time to swap out my suspension, slipper clutch and other goodies on my 03' yet but having sold my wheels I got the chance to weigh the front Marchesini with my slick on against the Talon/Excel with the same slick.

The front wire wheel weighed 19.4 lbs (sans rotor) and the Marchesini weighed in at 17.9 lbs. Although that 1.5 pounds doesn't sound like much, it'll be a huge difference with turn in and acceleration.

I'm told the rear difference is less - I'll be back when I have some more time.

By the way, I think I'm going to run a ceramic rotor up front too just for shits and giggles, I think there's another pound to be had there...

MikeE
Who makes ceramic rotors???????? What do they look like?
How much more are they compared to flash wavy supermoto rotors?

I recently was sent a picture of the new motomaster flame disc - it looks awesome. Sorry I don't know how to include pictures a forum post.

The importer in Australia told me that they should have the new flame supermoto kit in within 2 weeks.

Has anyone seen them in the stores in the US? I know motostrano has yet to list them on their site - maybe they want to sell of all of their old stock first?

Yeah, light wheels and unsprung weight matter most in acceleration, keep us updated!

kww
I mounted the wheels up to my old '03. The front, as mentioned was 1.5 lbs lighter and the rear turned out to be 1.6 lbs lighter - that 3.1lb difference can really be felt in turn in, the bike seems to slide a little better too...

The rear has the wrong sprocket and brake rotor carrier on it and the whole wheel needs to move to the right to allow for chain/tire clearance.

I took off the carrier for the sprocket and spaced it 4.5mm, but it's not quite enough - I'l get the correct carriers from Marchesini as Rob's bike suffers from no clearance issues.

I'm not sure about the gold look yet - I'll post a picture later.

MikeE
I've never been a fan of the looks of cast rims but these look aboslutely horn! As for the ceramic rotors, the only thing I can say is
$1600 + pads? You're f#$%*# joking!!!
