i like to hear things around me, like my engine, and other cars horns or sirens. but i also like to have a little music in the background. so i chose to install speakers in my helmet. i tried using ear buds on one quick ride and it just seemed very strange not being able to hear anything. also it is illegal in most states to have ear buds in both ears while riding. so this way i can have stereo music and still be legal doing it.

other nice thing is that you dont have to mess with the headphones constantly when the helmet comes on and off..
just put the helmet on, tuck the cord and go.

For you guys using the Etymotic buds, you should look into these:http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/erme.aspx

They are custom molded to your ears. Both my girlfriend and I have a set. They work great as earplugs, or if you plug the ER6 into them, they are great ear bugs. You can get an adapter from Etymotic to make them work. I think it is only ER6 not the i model though.

Just find a local hearing aid place that sells Etymotic. I think they were about $125. You can probably even just have a hearing aid place take the molds and send them in yourself I would guess.

I just posted about my ear plugs, but I'll note that I don't use the speakers with them while riding. I use them only as plus to keep the wind noise down. I tried with music once, but rode a lot more like a jackass than I generally like to. So no more music for me!

listen to what your bike is doing and enjoy the sound of your bike.

I'll be the first one to call you a slow, miserable, unsafe cunt if you feel the need to have any more external influences.

I agree, the only time I ever listen to music is when commuting, and even then only one earbud is in with the volume down as low as possible.

It's not the safest, but for long straight roads it's damned boring. I haven't noticed a difference in riding ability, but if I ever noticed it affecting me inadvertently I'd stop, safety is more important than music.

I use a 60gb iPod with a RF remote velcro'd to the top fork clamps. The iPod just stays in my pocket on random. I rode from Minnesota to Tennessee on a gixxer 750, and I don't think I would have made it with out tunes.

Sony has a great sounding set of earbuds that do a good job of acting as an earplug for about $20, They're small and don't get pinched in a helmet.
