Keeps the heat inside the pipe. Two real benefits. The hotter gas in the exhaust pipe moves quicker being hot, and the reduced outside temperature keeps the the carb and airbox cooler so denser air can flow into the engine.

That's the theoretical reason for it alright. On a low HP motor like a motorcycle engine it *might* get you a whopping 1/2 HP. I put it on my headers for a much simpler reason... there was no heat shield on the WB headers, the wrap keeps me from burning my leg.

Thanx

I am thinking about using it, how much faster will it kill a pipie? I live in an area that is quitw damp so this may be a legitimate issue for me? Thanx, Ed

If you're using a ti pipe I wouldn't worry about it. I saw a buddies ti pipe that was unwrapped after about a year (crunched the header) and there was no corrosion. A steel pipe I'd worry about, or if you kept the bike outside, but if it's kept in a dry place it shouldn't be a problem.

A little more expensive fix is to have your exhaust ceramic coated. I've had this done to a few of my bikes and it does the same thing as header wrap... but it looks MUCH better, IMHO. It costs about $35-75, depending on the color you choose and how big your system is. I've used Performance Coatings a couple times. Great customer service and quick turn around time.

I've also used www.hpcoatings.com. Nothing but praise for them, too. I had them ceramic coat my pistons for my Ducati. I'll be doing the same thing for my KTM when I slap a hi comp in there. They also have some pretty cool appearance coatings, too. http://www.hpcoatings.com/appearance_coatings.htm
