From all that I know and have read, in asphalt is knee draggin', but in dirt, you go foot out MX style.
My personal experience is foot out in MX - haven't done real MX in 4 or 5 years, though. But in asphalt I don't stick my foot out much, but still I do it sometimes. Inspite of that when on asphalt I don't knee-drag either - not while backin' it in, as I've seen some pro's doing -, I just knee-drag just on high lean curves.
Oh, the gear you're using is very important in this question too, because if you use rubber sole boots and stick your foot out in the asphalf you might snap your foot, so if you plan on doing this you must have plastic sole boots that slide on asphalt, although their not going to be as good in the dirt as the rubber sole would.
