First post here. I am planning on buying my first motorcycle sometime in the near future. I would appreciate some advice from the experience out there. I really like the DRZ400SM.

I have zero motorcycle experience and short legs (30" inseam).

My main motivation for a motorcycle is fun, and occasional freedom from the car, but I might want to commute every now and then (approx 45 mi. one way).

Is this bike a bad idea, regarding the info above? I know there are shorter riders out there that can do it, but I am a beginner.

Thanks

I just bought the 400SM. I'm pretty happy with it so far. I wish it had more power, but that's what I get when going from a RC51 to this. It's not a bad first bike since it's light, nimble, and you probably won't get yourself into too much trouble with a handful of throttle. With that said, it's a tall bike(35" seat height) and you're going to drop it, and crash it. It's going to happen.

I learned how to ride on dirt bikes and dual sports. When I made the transition to street I went with a Buell M2. (back in 98) Probably not the best first street bike(heavy mule) but if you can learn to ride with experienced guys it will help out alot. Try taking a MSF course, take it easy, and watch out for those crazy cage drivers.

I think it would be a great beginner bike, power is relatively low, it handles very well and brakes very well, everything you need to avoid accidents and have fun. Also doesn't get much damage if you tip it over etc.
