I was reading on MotovationUSA's site for their DRZ axle sliders:

This part currently will not fit US/Canada spec bikes that use a cotter pin and castle nut IF the use of the cotter pin is necessary. Installing of these sliders will require removal of the cotter pin. If your bike utilizes an original Suzuki lock nut, this will fit just fine.
I have an '06 DRZ400sm. It has a cotter pin. How do I tell if it's a castle nut or the OEM lock nut?

If you have a cotter pin, you should have a castle nut to go with it. Go to your dealer and get the lock nut, it swaps right out. (My S model had the cotter pin/castle nut setup and the sm wheels I bought came with the sm axle that had the lock nut on it, I just stuck that on the S axle and went about my business)

What confuses me is they say "if the cotter pin is necessary." Is it?

I'm not using MotovationUSA sliders, in fact, I just did the skateboard wheels. Obviously had to remove the cotter pin to get it to work. It may even be possible to get the pin back in.

I suppose the sliders would hold it on there if it backed off, but I felt better having the lock nut on there.
