Some of us in Michigan are currently debating whether or not track days that are split into sessions based experience level are a good idea. See thread here: http://www.supermotojunkie.com/showthread.php?t=58614

I thought I'd post up a new thread to see how many other Sumo riders go to track days where they are split up into different groups (i.e beginner/expert, etc.)

I'm just trying to find out if running different groups at a Sumo track day is fairly common or not.

Thanks for the input

Seems most sport bike track day run classes. I just trying to see if Sumo track days are similar.

I have raced an SV against SM's and it is kind of a weird mix. The SV's generally run a bit quicker but the SM's take such a different line into the corner that they are very difficult to pass. It can lead to frustration on the part of people trying to pass.

It would probably be better for all if the SM's had their own class. The riding style is just so different from that of the SS bikes that they don't really mix all that well.

The track days that I have been to will separate if there are enough of each group to do so. If not we just run together but respect each other. The races are always split up though.

I think this idea would transfer well to the group I ride at too. I think it wasn't as bad when there went as many people showing up.

where i go it is totally open. no tech, no ambulance, no flags nothing. you pay, you park, you ride. that is it. and often you are mixed in with the very best riders in supermoto.

i have done days where it is just me and a pro ama team and that is it.

it could be intimidating for a first timer with no previous track experience....

rule number one, you are responsible for a safe pass if you are doing the passing.
rule number two, if you are being passed hold your line.

so the two places down here are just totally self regulated. and of the 10 times or so i have gone it has never been an issue.

I was at a motocross track today with the slicks. I passed slower riders and had others pass me as well. Rowdy's rules worked perfectly.

hhhmmmm... seems like most people run open track days in sumo. Guess that settles it.

But thats pretty cool to do. How many people get to say they race with the pros (even if its just practice for the pros) and how many people get to wreck and take out a pro rider? Not something to purposefully do, but it could be a kind of cool result from a wreck (i guess).

Around here (Socal) you could end up being on track with any of the top Supermoto pros as Rowdy already mentioned. I have also ridden on the track with Nicky Hayden and his brothers and Max Biaggi. I've seen no problems with pros and amatuers riding in the same sessions. Even my son on his 110 is out there with us.

Its a free for all at infineon karting facilities as well. The road course is usually broken in to 3 groups, and stupid sport bikes hold motards up all day in the corners / braking areas.
