Hey folks, maybe this should be in the tech section, I don't know. Anyway, I took my bike to get inspected (I'm in PA) and it failed! They said it needed a chain guard and the front brake didn't light. Just the rear. I thought this was O.K. So much for going to my local dealer!

Any thoughts on how to hook it up so that the front and rear brake trigger the brake light? I have a kit that was called a Dangerous Toys kit. I don't think they're in business anymore, but the rear unit looks like something Baja Designs has. Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks!

yeah what he said...

Hey,

I am from PA too, though I haven't gotten my CR inspected yet.

I got my brake switches from Eline Accessories. They are aftermarket units, K&S I think.

Where did you need the chain guard??? Over the front sprocket or the whole top of the chain? I don't remember seeing a regulation for that in Title 75 of the PA code.

I am going to check up on that when I get back home.....

Hi,what is the best way to fit them,a little advice would be good.
Ta for any help.
Empty the brake resivoir, lines and caliper,
Remove old bolt (not sure the tech name, but it's the one the banjo fitting slides over),
Don't lose the copper crush washers :infrandom
Put Switch in place of old bolt with one crush wahser on each side,
refill brake fluid and bleed the system of any air.

DONE!!

Here's the PA Code on Cycle Inspection...

A chain cover is required for street legal bike in Pennsylvania....

This comes from Title 67 of the Pennsylvania code, not Title 75 which is the vehicle code.....
This is a good reference in general as it shows the sensible requirements for equipping a motard for the street! I will post this link into a separate message.

http://www.pacode.com/secure/data/067/chapter175/subchapHtoc.html

exerpt:
§ 175.155. Chassis.

(a) Condition of chassis. All items on the chassis shall be in safe operating condition as described in § 175.160 (relating to inspection procedure).

(b) Vehicle frame. A vehicle frame shall be in solid condition.

(c) Seats. A motorcycle shall be equipped with a seat for the operator which is firmly anchored to the frame or support. No metal spring shall protrude from the driver’s seat.

(d) Chain guard or drive shaft cover. A covering device to prevent contact with a rider while in a normal riding position shall be provided.

(e) Stands. A motorcycle stand shall operate and be strong enough to support the vehicle and stay in the proper position when not holding the bike in standing position.

(f) Hand-hold. A hand-hold device shall be provided if the motorcycle is designed to carry more than one person.

(g) Footrests. A motorcycle operated or driven upon the highway shall have footrests for each person operating or riding upon the vehicle.

(h) Highway bars. If the motorcycle is so equipped, highway bars shall have a maximum width of 26 inches and shall be located less than 15 inches from the foot controls and shall not interfere with the operation of foot controls.

I think a countershaft sprocket cover pretty much qualifies. It protects the rider from contact with the chain while in normal riding position. The rear chainguards would only protect you in abnormal riding position, ie: for some reason your feet are on the swingarm.
