Racers, Crew Members, Team Managers, Spectators,

Do you have any suggestions for rule changes / general suggestions for the 2005 AMA Pro Racing Supermoto season?

I personally do not know of an official system in place for suggestions for changes, but with enough input, I'd bet that such a system could be easily created.

Possible topics:
Eligible motorcycles
Qualifying procedures
Superpole
One-day vs. two-day formats
Double-header rounds
Etc.

Please understand that I am asking this question as an individual and outside the direction of anyone at AMA Pro Racing.

Please also understand that absolutely no one was pleased with delay in the finalizing of the season calendar, nor could the calendar changes (Reno,
South Boston) have been avoided.

Thanks,
John Casimir

As a spectator and club racer....

First and foremost, get a schedule in place as early as possible.

Eligible machines... include the two-strokes

Create a third class, a Lightweight class similar in structure to the current 125/250 MX class without the rule that points you out.

Increase the purse.

In 2006, include a race at Daytona Bike Week.

That's about all I can think of for now. Thanks for asking.

There is an official system, it's the Riders Only section of AMAProRacing.com

Licensed racers, crew, team owners, and other AMA credential holders are able to contact AMA regarding such things as rule changes, etc. In any proposed rulebook change, riders et al have a comment period prior to implementation. Seemed to me to be nothing more than lip service to say Pro Racing was doing something for the riders, but that's another story.....

As far as a publicly voiced "suggestion box" goes, this is most definitely the place to do it. If you get many responses, perhaps you could categorize them, and present them in order of importance to the powers that be. Good luck, and thanks for the help.

As a spectator, I have attended many SM races but so far my favorite venue was the AMA race at Irwindale in '03 mainly because we could see the whole track. Unfortunately, attendance was poor that night because most of So Cal was on fire and the weather was chilly but we could see all of the action and went away very excited. So please try to have another race there and other similar venues like that along with the mix of street courses (Reno, Vegas) and moto festivals like in Colorado. Most importantly, wherever you hold a race make sure there is ample bleacher or grandstand seating with good views. People should not be expected to have to stand for long periods of time or to try to look over someone's head to see the track. One more thing: More races throughout the season(10-12), and start earlier like in March. How about at least one AMA Pro SM race a month from March to November?

After seeing a few of the World Supermoto events, it is clear that the racing facilities that the AMA guys raced on are very sub-par. Parking lots, streets, paint lines, badly deteriorating surfaces, man-hole covers, street signs, and lamp posts. If you throw in an alley or two and a few parked cars, you would have every obstacle that street riders encounter every day.

Why not have the events at actual road courses? There are many carting facilities around the country that would be great to hold a race at. Nashville was at a race track, but come on, they had a turn that exited by going up the banking, which really seemed to upset the suspension and looked pretty rough on the rider. The riders have enough to worry about when they are racing, why not let them race on a track where the paved surface is at least designed for racing. In Vegas, the one section was so badly deteriorated, that there was only one good line.

The Euros seem to be racing on tracks that are tight enough to provide good racing and fast enough to separate the men from the boys. I think the AMA should take a look at what they are doing in Europe and follow what they are doing.

Maybe once this sport really takes off and can stand on its own, the AMA will hold the races at venues that were designed for the business insted of these parking lot affairs. It has to be hard for the riders to get any practice when the riding style is so different from where they practice to where they race. Practice at a track, then go race in a parking lot where the surface is broken up and there are paint lines all over the place. I know that it is the same for everyone, but I would rather see who is the absolute fastest, insted of who can manuver around the road hazards the best. The same guys would probably still win, but they would be going lots faster and it would be more fun to watch.

In a perfect world I guess.
