well reading closely, they talk about gearing and being a dual sport supermoto, i.e. comfortable to ride on the street for quite awhile and hit the track, so best of both worlds:

"Aggressive speedsters will jump for joy with a bike that yearns to run hard from 30mph to 90mph. Hooligans, on the other hand, may bum out at the fact the bike doesn’t want to jump off the line and huck wheelies in first and second gear. It’s just more about taste than anything else. The bike is fast, real fast for a stock 690 single. And we have heard that an exhaust with some tuning will awaken the beast even more. Gearing may enhance the launch but it may give up some of its awesome traits higher in the revs".

Fast, real fast, well that says that suspension or gearing changes for the wheelies, but its made to go fast, which they liked, but they only said they drove it for a short time, so further tests to follow....and of course, i never listen much to one report on a machine....I'm loving mine so far, especially since I have a K6 GSXR1000 sitting next to it in the garage

I definitely agree with them! The bike is fast and its a all around great bike, but I was just expecting a lot more power in the lower gears!

yeah, it kind of surprised me a bit, since my 620 RXC used to just hop up there, but all comes down to suspension, gearing, etc....the 690 SMC is actually pretting nice cruisin down the interstate in 6th gear

Here is my advice for learning to wheelie a heavy SM.

Stand up in low 2nd gear, press down on bars elbows up! as the bike rebounds snap the throttle open and lean back. If it starts to get out of hand the de compression will save u in second but try to cover the rear brake.

OR... Find a hill, approach the crest in the meat of the band in 3rd, open her up and lean back... it took me a while to get my 625 wheelie properly, but once you get it you will be addicted and be running from the law in no time.

I just got back from my nightly ride :bike: and the bike had no problems coming up in second. I weigh about 210 and didn't have to pull on the bars...Wroomp and up she went :arsenal. I believe the RPMs were around 4000. I am still running it in so it was a short one. I have the power setting on advance  makes the bike more responsive. The only problem is my A$$..That seat takes some getting use to.

Even though I'm having a difficult time pulling wheelies with this bike, I'm loving how fun it is to ride. The slipper clutch is one of the best features of this bike! I like to pull my wheelies with the clutch not the power of the bike anyway. It makes it more predictable and I still can't get it to clutch it up. Anyone have any tips as to what rpms to be in either 2nd or 3rd gear to clutch it up.

No Power!!! Help!

Hi Boys,

My brother and I got 690 Es over the weeked and long story short, his is WAY down on power.

Mine will loft the wheel in 1st, 2nd and a smidge in 3rd and his is barely lifting in first. We swapped bikes to see if it was him, and it isn't.

It's like his "power setting" (#2) feels like my #1/

Also, his bike runs hotter and his fan turns on all the time (mine never has).

I've unplugged the throttle restricting wires, but no improvement.

HELP!!!

yeah, not normal....

i'm wondering if the dealer jacked up the setup....or KTM did, i would take it back to the dealer, have them reinstall the flash in the ECU, and then let it sit at idle for 15 minutes without touching anything, as the ECU has to recalibrate...

690 lemon?

Yeah, it's a huge bummer about my brother's bike. Going back to the dealer tomorrow. Hopefully it's something simple like air intake, resetting the FI etc.

But I'm wondering, could it just be a lemon? He has oil seepage from the ignition cover and from a gasket right in the middle of the cylinder head.

Also, be sure to locktite and torque down EVERYTHING. I was surprised how many bolts were out of spec.

Any thoughts on how we should proceed with the dealership/KTM?
