06 450 SMR radial brake fade

I have searched the forums and have found a couple of answers, but still not sure how to proceed. I have an 06 KTM SMR 450 and during the last few races by the end of the race the level is at the bar. I can get the lever to feel good by bleeding the system, but it is needing to be done for every race. Before the start of the weekend I replaced the pads with a new set of the KTM organics and the first 2 sessions the felt great, but by the end of the day the lever started to feel like mush again. On Sunday the lever felt ok in the morning, but by the end of each race it would go to the bar.

Over on ktmtalk someone had posted part number 59412048000 as a retro to fix to 05 bikes from this issue and that the 06’s should be fine. I look the part number up and there is no description just a $102 price. My 06 was one of the first ones built, so it may not have the fix on it, but I am a little reluctant to order it when I have no idea on what the kit is or if I need it.

Has anyone purchased this kit, does it work, what is it?
My question for you 06 owners do you have any sort of clips or backing plates that go on your pads?
Any other way to fix this?

Thanks!

If You Replace The Master Cylinder It Will Help You With That Problem. Me An My Buddy Have 05's And He Put On A 16mm Brembo Radial Master Cylinder It Fixed The Brake Fade. Im Looking At A Full Brake Kit From Beringer To Fix My Problem. Thank God I'm A Lockhartphillips Dealer Other Wise I Would Be Broke. Hope This Helps

Jim,

Sometimes I think you are the guy on the Comcast commercial that finishes the internet, you always see to find stuff noone else knows.

Master cylinder Ø: 17.46 mm for one caliper 19.05 mm for two calipers

Thanks!

Kurt

PS when are you coming out to the track??

Anyone here used the EBC brake pads on the stock SMR front brake caliper? I find them to be half the price of the KTM stock pads but the get glazed very quickly, start squealing and loose their stopping power. Anyone have a solution?? I think the EBC part number is MSX405.

I think the Brembo 19mm would make your brake feel like poop. I belive the issue with the fade has more to do with the fluid being over temp than the MC being sized wrong.

Maybe I should pop for one of those cool brake scoops Jim found in the bowls of the internet and see if that helps.

Do the EBC pads have a backing plate on them?

The EBC pads are complete shite. They ones for the 625SMC caliper are the same crap compound and were just as useless after ten hard laps. I tried everything I could think of to resurect them, but they never lasted more than a few hard laps.

They were cheap though, so I bought several pair. Now I give them away at the track to guys I DON'T like...

Mooner...I have an 055 KTM 450SMR. Is that kit different than what I already have on my bike? And if so, what is the differences? Why is it better? Thank You
I don't have the brake performance kit, as I use the Magrua caliper. But from what I read the kit is suppose to take care of some of the braking issues that the 05 FTE caliper has.

So let's have a poll... Is the problem part the:
a) master cylinder
b) caliper
c) both
d) neither, operator error ;)

Does anyone that races one of these bikes actually have no problems? If so, how did you manage that? I want better brakes but don't have deep enough pockets to just throw cash at the problem and hope for the best :(

How about fluid? Atol Super Blue is the bestest stuff in the world. I have used it on all my roadrace bikes as well as my tard. You can't boil the stuff. Given that all things are new on some of these bikes that precludes the normal change the pads, clean the calipers, swap out to stainless lines advice I'd normally give. The only thing left is the fluid.

motarded - I'm using Motul 600 high temp brake fluid and it has helped. But even with that it seems you have to bleed those darn things every race.

I don't know if the EBC pads have a backing plate as I don't know exactly what you mean by that. They are just pretty standard looking pads, the pad material attached to the steel caliper fitting.

Motul 600 here, bled extensively at the m/c and at the caliper. No stock fluid remaining... They have faded away completely (lever to bar) on the kart track and at Homestead. I bleed them and it helps, but not for long. One guy suggested I teflon tape the bleeder screw as he hypothesized air might get sucke in as I bleed due to coarse threads. Another guy told me not to do that because if any of the tape comes apart and floats away in the system, I could have big problems... I'm ready for a good hardware suggestion or two :D Is it possible to run sport bike brakes? They seem very bulletproff and plentiful...

I spoke with a couple of knowledgeable people today who both told me it was the m/c. I am going to switch to a Brembo 13mm intergral reservoir m/c after the race at Jennings this weekend and if my problems disapear, you all will be the first to know. Of the Factory Husa hot-dogs I know of, Loire runs a full-boogie billet Brembo setup (~$2,000...), Iddon runs the Beringer 12mm intregal res radial m/c (BRO12) and 4 piston radial mount caliper.
