I think that was 2002 - How sick would it be to have races at parking lots like that again.

DOT tires, no 16.5 wheels, 4.25 wide rims - stock brakes with just rotors - crappy bikes - probably ill-handling yet probably just as fun if not more fun

    Those were the days

My first race was Dec 2002 at Buttonwillow

That's some good stuff. Thanks for sharing. Great to see Rick P. dicing it up too. That's alot of hours on a 500, and it still hauls the mail. Keep 'em coming.

    Default Very Cool

I remember it well. Nicky rode my bike and spanked em all, he gave me the signed champagne bottle when it was done and i still have it.

I think that was Steve Drews first race, although i didn't transfer to the main, i think i finished between him and Chiz. Mark Cernicky almost set the fast time on his CR250 and when Casey broke his bike during superpole, he jumped on my other 450 and with out even a warm up lap, set a pretty respectable time.

Scott's right, I think only Pegram had a 5.0 rear rim, Nicky won on a bone stocker with a little 280mm front brake rotor and nothing else. Hell the tires were old take offs, those were the days. Remember the dirt section... it was the size of a big couch, and we still felt like we needed cuts or rains...

Good to see the pics of big Al.

    Thanks

Good stuff. I went with Gary Jones (multi-time National MX champion in the 70's) to pick up Larry Pegram from the airport and set him up with a White Brother's SM bike. Gary and I both worked for Dan and Tom White at the time. From that day forward I was hooked...only raced one season in Sportsman, so far...but still love it!

Old pics are awesome! I can't believe how far back the STTARS series goes. I didn't know nicky raced the series also.

Speaking of old pics, I was at Dewayne Jones house the other day dropping my suspension off and he showed me a pic of the first honda team from, Ithink 1973, he was in it and his brother Gary.

That'd be the one. Dewayne used to have a cr500 with a big dome bulging from the engine case. Some kinda Frankenstein-bike deal. Good people. D

Here is an early Ward shot - early 2003, six months or more before the first AMA pro race took place. Basic bike and he was running maxxis tires and regular moto gear. This is a shot that ran in Dirt Ride when I worked there. His rear tire is off the ground probably because it was hopping long - before slipper clutches and before riders learned to slip the clutch entering corners.

You don't see that on billboards in the USA anymore!! IMagine what the ACLU would do now a days if they saw "God Bless America" on a billboard in such large font!!!!

Does Nicky or any other pros race in the STTARS series anymore?

They all raced just for fun then and it would be just for fun now, most didnt do the whole series. If memory serves, Kevin did most of one season?

Nice to see Big Allan Y there. Lovely man, great family. Fond, fond memories of racing with him.
I was there that weekend, got spanked by a five year old in the mini class, a lad called Bronson Pearce who I see he is doing quite well these days.
Nice to see "Super" Cernicky too. And Ricky Pearce. Man, those were the days.

Hey Mike, awesome pics! What bikes were you on? I was gonna say 100 Hodaka for the two stroke, but the frame doesn't look right. The small four cylinder looks similar to a Honda 90, but that doesnt' fit the other bits either.

Oh, and the pics of the #34 bike Schwantz is on... a lot of the wheels / brakes and bits on that bike sure look familiar. Is that your current ride, or bits of it?

    Very cool.

Prerunner, those were heady days indeed. You'd never knew who'd show up. At that Anaheim meeting I was on the first row of the grid in the qualifying race with Nicky Hayden on the back. Two corners later he's round the outside of me banging handlebars! Worth the price of admission right there.
I spoke to him after and the kid apologized profusely but I told him not to bother, it was something I can tell my grandkids about. Lovely lad and I'm so glad he's doing a bit better this year on the Ducati.
