So I Need A new tire on my 09 DRZ SM and Does Anyone Know if I can put in any other tire size besides the stock size and any recommendations on a size? Brand?

you can safely go with a 150/60...Some people even fit 160. You will get a thousand tire recommendations...I know the Avon Distanza has been my favorite. I have 150/60 sm compound.

I agree on the Distanzas. I have an SM front and DS rear and its been great so far. A ton of grip even in gravel or rain. I bet its even nicer with a SM rear, I just dont need it and wanted to get some extra miles out of the rear.

I have a 150/60 pilot power and I found it to be way better than the stock. I am going to buy another one when this one wears out.

Another vote for the Pilot Power 150.
    Great tire on the DRZ400SM.
It lasts a long time on the DRZ, and it is STICKY.

But I recommend getting a Pilot Power up front, too.
If you don't, the back tire will push the front.

Search, top of the page, please use it.
The DR-Z is like a fat ballerina, sure it's kinda heavy, but it's suprisingly graceful.

the 150/60 is the SM... the 150/70 is the DS

What is the general opinion on Shinkos - I have seen people love them and some laugh at them...

Being an actual user of this brand...... I love them. I have the 009 ravens. Sticks, lasts, and cheap!! I ride year round and ride a ton on wet roads with not one complaint. I've takin them on a fair amount of hard runs and surprisingly keeped up with the pilot power I have up front. Very perdictable and smooth.

I have the Shinko Steaths...I have not mounted them yet and Im looking forward to trying them out. A set of these tires run $172 to my door and thats the same price as the rear Distanza. I usually go through 2 rears a year.

It is strange. It almost seems like a "popular" thing to do... making fun and bashing Shinkos. And 99.9% of the time, the people talking the hardest trash about them have never even tried a set.

I run the 003 Stealth on my DRZ. It has seen many track days, dirt roads and carved every local canyon. I can put a knee down with them and drag the peg sliders without worry. Plus, it appears to be wearing quite well (My orig. Dunlop rear chorded in less than 1500 miles).

For what it's worth, I've run the same rear on my '04 ZX-12R, and now run a set of the intermediate on my new Hayabusa. I don't ride like a puxxy, and they have been fine on it. So I have no reservations about recommending them to anyone.

Granted, there are sticker, more predictable TRACK tires. But, for the wear, the price and this level of performance, you can't beat them on the street.

I can't tell you how many times I see guys throw huge money into "premium" rubber, just to go and wear out the center two inches of the tire. Buy rubber that matches your honest abilities and demands. Otherwise, you are like a fat kid wearing spandex cycling shorts for the "aerodynamic" gains.

The only real thing that freaks people about my Shinko rear, is that is howls LOUD when you back it into the corners. BUT, people get out of your way!

Thanks for your review Brakelate! I got the 003 Steaths because they were the softest compound of the Shinko line. I ride this bike every day and tire replacement costs have become and issue. If this tire takes the WNC twisties well, Ill be more than happy...

So where is the best place to order these shinko's on the cheap? American moto tire does not carry them.

I haven't tried anything other than what my bike came with, 150 Avon Distanzias. Wow, what a nice fucking set of tires. Full throttle around damp corners and didn't skip a beat once.

So I decided to get the Avon Distanzia 150/70 17 DS Rear and plan to get the 120/70 17 SM front since they are a bit pricey

Nice choice! Ive been happy with the setup so far. Great grip. It is a slightly different profile than stock. That was the only thing I had to get used to. After about three rides I didnt even notice a difference anymore. The rear is definitely a little taller than stock as well. Feels better one up.

Pilot Power #1 i have had lots of different tires and with a 470cc you the best 150/60/17 or 160/06/17 both work good i like the 160/60/17 the best and for the front 120/70/17 . the fit is great and if you want even more grip go with race powers thats what i always use

For general street riding/toying around, any sticky radial will work. I'm running pilot powers. If you want to do a little exploring off-road or on dirt, get something like the Avon Distanzas. Just my .02.

I am running the 003 Stealths and they work great. The cost for the set was cheaper then just a rear tire.
