    Default Making ice tires?

What type of tires are best for making your own studded ice tires?

I was going to get a box of Kold Kutters and make my own ice tires just to mess around at my buddies house but Im not sure what kind of tires to start with?

    I have a 2007 CRF150R. I have a set of 17's for it and the stock 19" front/16" rear

    Suggestions and advice?

I made mine with the stock tires on a TTR125le. Lasted about a year until I started tearing out a lot of screws. Bought a set of feredettes and wondered why I wasted my time making them when the feredettes were so much better for traction.

use the stock wheels, big solid knobs and fresh tires are best. worn knobs dont take screws well. line the tire with a old street tire. i see your in mass,so call www. a1parts.biz they run the races and can usualy help with this. may have mine out today!

gotta run a liner so you can run longer studz. Also the studs need to be aligned correctly for optimal traction.

The folks running home made tires around Mi. have had excellent results with some advice from locals........

I can't offer much advice on making tires since I only did it one year and I will never do it again. Jon Rosine, Jeff ferdette, and Andy Fenwick all make excellent ice tires. IMO Andy makes the best mini tires. You will find there contact info at www.wismoto.com or www.deiseljo.com

Do not use your 17's for the ice as there is not tire that is made for them that a decent ice tire can be made.

I'd agree with the "don't use 17" if you have an alternative use them instead of the 17"s. The 16/19 combo seems to work well on the CRF150R or RM85cc type 2S......... HRCNIC has made them and they seam to work very well........

Will check the guy i ride with saturday,he runs a 16/19 set. see what brand ect. I tried a new type liner today. That blue hose you can get at harbour frieght 50 feet was 12$ used it dubbled up,two wraps, split in half. no flats today, but i used short screws 5/8 long. with short screws you tend to tear the knobs off, longer screws with a old tire you dont as much.Just screw them together.

I made some with the stock 150r tires last year but they were short screws no liner and were starting to come out after only one season. This was the first set I ever made and they worked great everyone that rode my bike was looking at the tires and seeing what brand they are so they could get the same and make there own.

I found some 17 inch DOT legal knobbies that I used a 17 inch old slick inside of. These should allow more screws and longer screws but just barely fit the bike about a 1/4 inch all around so if I get a flat it might chew up some parts.

I used a pair of 17 inch rears front and rear.

I think they will work well but we will see, I like to do and try things myself. Sure I could just buy some but what fun would that be. I'm the same with suspension. I rather learn a few ways to do it wrong than to pay some one and not learn anything.

A friend gave me a set of tires to try this year. Do I need to change jetting on my ttr 125 for running in these cold temps? If so, what jetting are you guys using for winter?

    Thanks,
    Chris

Would not hurt to richen it up a bit. But it will run the way it is, might be harder to start.

Here are my Kenda K761 "ice tires" on my KX65

    Front is a 120/70-12"
    Rear is a 110/90-12"

    Both have liners.

Obviously the front still has more 5/8" Kold Kutters to be installed

Teddy do you need handle bars for that thing?

I drilled some holes in the ice today, and then walked very fast back to shore. I was only out about 10 feet from shore but the ice was only a few inches.

Do you have an extra set of "pitbike" bars? I could run some other bars.... I thought it would be fun with the clip-ons

Ron still reports 5-6 inches of ICE........ I'll chat with him later today, you know close to shore it is thinner as well as if your close to a log or dock.

    Jason has plenty too.......

I watched a guy riding his Yamaha on Grass Lake tonight. I haven't checked the ice thickness yet cause I don't have my bike ready and I have to buy new tires. The ice on Grass Lake seems to be pretty bumpy due to freeze and thaw over the last week. I found some Shinko tires at chaparral-racing.com for what seems to be reasonable prices and lots of sizes available on the SR44 type. Tread pattern seems to be the same as HRC Nick 11 is running.
