    Default Just picked up a 2009 SMR510

Well, been slowly piecing together my CR250 to convert to street use, but decided it's much more fun to have a purpose built bike for each. Especially when you find a super killer deal on a new (leftover 09 with 4 miles) SMR510.

I just have 2 quick questions, while I have your attention? First, does anyone know if it's ok to remove the evaporative canister from the bike? Really is an eye-sore! From what I can gather, it just uses hot air from the crank-case to evaporate fuel vapors venting from the tank?

I'm pretty sure I can pull it..

One hose is from the fuel cap, the other just vents down behind the engine, and the other comes from the side of the head. My best educated guess is it just burns off/cleans up some of the gases coming from the fuel tank.

Anybody pull it, and no changes?

When you pull it, replace the nipple on the cylinder with a cap screw and loctite it in there so no bad stuff gets in your engine. Oh, and nice bike!

The nipple on the engine, does it thread out or is it epoxied or something into the head?

It has a slot on the end, as if you could turn it out with a flat head screwdriver but it is pretty tight and it feels like ill break off one of the sides. It also looks like it has some sort of orange epoxy or sealant around it on the head.

How did you guys do it?

Also I'm looking to remove the gray/green check valve and hose with a small cap check similar to this (see below) one? Anyone know if the OEM one serves a more important purpose that the Turner one will not provide?

Ohhhhhh, that is what I've been looking for. I always thought this forum had a lack of categories. Especially after I began posting questions in the thread I did. Just never clicked on it, doesn't jump out to be what it really is (to me anyway).

    Thanks a lot, exit90..

Here's a thread with pictures of the cannisterectomy.

Mine was done by the dealer so I do not know the particulars of how it was done. Some people say to remove the nipple and install a screw as a plug, some say to put a plug over the nipple.

No worries on using the check valve you show.

Pulled it off a little bit ago, no big deal. Actually found a small rubber #8 screw cap that slipped over fairly tightly. Same as what was in those pictures.

I normally wouldn't think twice about ditching that thing, it's just the first NEW bike I bought. Also, I noticed the vent/check valve sort of had a pop-off pressure to it when blowing through. Wasn't sure if it was needed for the FI to function properly.

Everything is coming together. Pulled off the front turn signals, mirrors, chain guide and cut it down leaving just enough to possibly keep it away from the tire, and the whole rear lighting assembly etc... Now just waiting on my new tail light and signals and under bar mirror. Still haven't decided on front signals... probably going with the ZETA hand guards/signals.
