    Default gas tank help

good day everyone. I have a red xr650r and i am in the process of converting it to black, my question is, has anyone ever successfully painted a plastic gas tank? I've heard that the vapor leaks out through the plastic and therefore the paint wont stick to the tank. I have the stock tank and an aftermarket larger tank, both red, so i guess if i cant paint them i'd be looking to trade... any takers?

    thanks for the help

i know its possible to paint them. not sure of the durability of it. you should go to a sticker shop and just have them "wrap" it in black vinyl.

well i guess what i really want is to have it rhino lined but i dont know if that will stick either and would be more expensive as a trial than paint... i've read of people trying to paint with no success and also dying it which also isn't perfect

u have to use epoxy reson primer crap on the tank before u add paint... regular pain just peels off in like a week. i've used regualr pain and primer and it doesn't work... hence why i give u the one week time frame for ur tanks pain to start peeling. in like 3days the pain bubbles up!

u can always dye it black... which is what im going to do on my cr500 project. go to walmart buy the black rits dye liquid stuff. u put like 1oz for every 500ml of water (the instruction are on the bottle). basically find a container or make a container big enough to fit ur tank. fill the tank up with hot water (to soften up the plastic to accept the dye and cap it off. fill up ur container with enough water so ur gas tank full of hot water will be complety submerged in hot water. drop ur tank in, add the dye. wrap in in a garbage bag to provide installation and let it sit over night!

pull it out and check the color, if u don't like it, dumb the water on the inside of the tank, fill it up with more hot water, and put it back in. keeps it nice and hot to accept the dye.

we do this all the time with our lacrosse heads and they are basically the same plastic, so i know this works! plus it's pretty cheap!
and if u don't like the finish get some of that black plastic polish stuff and hit it with that... it'll work out great
