    Default Painting Heat Shield Question

I'm thinking about painting my stock heat shields on my 2008 SM 610 flat black. I think that would look better than the shiny silver color on there now. I'm going with a high-temp flat black paint. Has anyone already done this - pictures?

ummm...when you do it if your boo tubs on it it may just rub the paint off....if it does you might try a flat black wheel paint with the special clear.

I'm pretty sure just my pant leg is going to contact it, the picture below shows what I'm talking about. Below that is a picture of a bike that looks like it had the shields painted and that's what I'd like to do

I used 500* engine paint in a low-gloss which is not flat black. I think the low-gloss is easier to keep looking nice than flat black. Over a year and it is holding up fine.

    That looks good!
When you say low-gloss do you mean semi-gloss?
I got the 1300-2000 flat black header paint so it wouldn't burn, but if the 500 engine paint works I have more color choices.
    Thanks for the photo.

I found that picture on a thread about 610 exhausts - see link below.

Apparently the semi-gloss engine paint does the trick. I'll stick to black tho.... :-)

I beleive the paint is labeled low-gloss could be semi-gloss. It's the standard brand of engine paint all parts stores sell. I painted the inside of the heat sheild as a test and rode it a week.. no issues.

That 1200* header paint needs to bake to become durable. I don not beleive the heat shield will get hot enough. I use VHT brand on my old Kawasaki commuter bikes.

I just found some low gloss black paint online made by Dupli-Color. I'll see if my auto parts store carries it. Any trick to painting it?

Yea, I beleive that is the exact paint I used. You have to get it clean for the paint to sick. I did not sand it at all. Clean it with paint thinner on another solivent. If the paint start to bead up like it is not sticking wipe it off while it is still wet and start over. Mine did this on one piece, on the second try the paint went on perfect.

Be sure to apply some thread lock on the bolts when you put it back on.

If the paint doesn't work, try to see if there are any hi temp coating shops or powder coaters in your area. That shield should be considered a small size bracket and shouldn't cost more then $20 to powder coat.

There is a powder coating shop across the bridge in Richmond. I wonder what they would charge?

I did mine w/ Dupli color engine paint (black) too. Looks much better than silver.

Thanks to the advice I received on here I went ahead and painted my exhaust shields low gloss black. I used Dupli Color engine paint
and gave it three light coats and let it dry overnight. I think it camouflages the covers that I felt stuck out like a sore thumb.

I also removed the rear turn signal spacers which moved the turn signals in about two inches
on each side. I feel that gives the back end a little cleaner look.

Below are pictures with my black exhaust covers and how the bike looks with the turn signal spacers removed.

Looks great! I did the same mod on the rear signals. The longer stems were to clear the stock muffler. Looks much better shorter with the the Leo pipe.

Thanks to your picture I went ahead and actually tried it. I feel the black covers look better make them and way less noticeable.

Take a hack saw to that lic. plate holder and cut off those "side reflectors" while you're at it, then get some smaller mirrors and and and...

I raised the license plate holder up about two inches and the reflectors bolt on the sides. I ride through some knarley traffic
and the Super Duke 2 mirrors work very well. But I do appreciate your opinion and will file it for future reference.

I live in Marvelous Marin County and I got pulled over for having a license plate light out. I don't need any unnecessary aggravation.

    Thanks!
The tires on there are brand new. I will take another picture when I get them scrubbed in.
After taking a Jeff Burkhart Supermoto class at Infinion Raceway I have no fear of wearing them off.
