    Unhappy Well S#!T....610 Advice needed.

well I just bought a 2006 SM610 from another member on the board.

Bike had 3400 (claimed) miles and the owner seemed like a straight up middle aged kind of guy that answered all my questions etc...

well since the bike was about 900miles from me,was fairly low mileage and I was getting it for a good deal, I took it and when through uship to have it delivered.

keys and title show up in the mail a few days after the bike and I start this thing up yesterday...

F#$k ! the bike makes a TON of noise from the LS of the motor. sounds like a damn sewing machine!!!
I pulll the CCT and it has 9-10clicks showing(depending how you count it.)

My question: I can't imagine these things sound this shitty from the factory so I figure its the camchain(which the owner did include in the box...thanks alot)
3400 miles??? please, someone tell me that can't be right. and since I have NO IDEA how long this thing has been driven around like this what other bits might have been damaged???
I was told these bike were "bulletproof" but if I've got to replace the damn cam chain almost as often as tires, I'm going back to a LC4.

I got about 7.5k miles on my first chain. I took the bike apart this afternoon to change the chain for the second time. I am at about 23.5k miles now. Shortly after changing the chain the first time, I put on a MCCT. The MCCT wasn't even on the whole lifetime of the current chain, and I more than doubled it's use.

I think it prematurely tightens the chain, but I have no proof. There seems to be a pretty wide window of actual miles that people are getting out of their chain. The miles you quoted are on the low end, but others have posted similar miles. For me the MCCT has worked well. No ideal if it will be the same for others?

The 560 was way to raw for me on the street. sold it for what I had in it and started looking for another LC4. found the husky for a good deal and picked her up instead...Funny how things work out, the next week 3 people posted their smc's for sale...
This was also the week before I found out about my wifes shoulder thing. that'll teach me to be impatient.

oh well, if the motor has to come apart anyway might as well throw in a FBF high-comp. piston!

Thanks for the imput. I have a MCCT on the Zook and it works well. sounds like it would be a good Idea for the 610, it couldn't work any worse than the stocker.

How do you know when, how often, and how much to adjust the manual cam chain tensioner?

    APE cam chain tensioner.

I really never worked out any exact science for tightening the tensioner. I know that the cam chain needs to be tight, but use some common sense. I've loosened the tensioner before when I thought I had it too tight. I was rewarded with some strange misfires. I've taken the left cover off and see how the cam chain is doing occasionally, maybe three or four times in the 16k. On my bike, when there are three threads left and exposed on the tensioner adjuster nut screw thing, it's a good time too see how close you are to the reed plate. It still has some adjustment, but it's good to take a look. You could probably work out something based on oil changes and turns on the tensioner.

Does it bolt right on? Or do you have to modify it to work?

If your cam chain gets too loose because of the cam chain tensioner being more than 10 clicks out, then the chain will begin to slap onto your oil reed valve and begin to destroy that. Once that is destroyed your bike is un-rideable, so if you hear the chain slapping, sort it out quickly!
    good luck

Yeah, I had a similar situation. Put a mcct on there, adjust it, and check the clearance with the reed valve under the left cover. If you have clearance (which you will), you'll be good to go.
