Default New To Sm And Need Drz Advice

    Hi,

I ended up here during a search for info on DRZ sm's. I sold my cruiser this spring and am looking to replace it with something I willl enjoy as much as I do Motorcross. I want to hit track days and of course a ton of urban assault. My initial focus was on a KTM 530 EXC with a set of SM wheels and tires. After a ton of reading I have decided to start with the DRZ due to cost and SM in-experience. From what i've read the DRZ is a great place to start. I am looking at two very different bikes.

The first is an 06 with 4600 km on it and the following mods. Apparently the engine amd suspension only have 100kms

    -Athena 440 Big Bore Kit
-Yoshimura Power-up Kit (Cams and CDI)
    -38mm FCR Carb (KX Style)
    -Ported Head
    -Boysen Quick Shot
    -Full Yoshimura RS-3 Exhaust
-Racetech Front and Suspension (Gold Valve 2's and springs)
    -Renthal Fatbars
    -Zeta Folding Levers
-Galfer Steel Braided Frone Brake Lines
    -Cycra Supermoto Handguards
-Zeta Billet Chain Guard and Sproket Guard
    -One touch fork Bleeders
    -Custom XGX Graphics
    -Brand new Pilot Power Tires

The second is a 2008 with 100kms on it totally stock. The kicker they both have the same asking price.

In the past when buying motorcross bikes I have looked for something well tuned, Exhaust, jetting and suspension done, well maintained and short on experience. Being a 2 Stroke nut for the last 15 years I feel a little out of my element here.

-Is there any thing I need to find out about the modded bike
-Should I have a dealer look at the modded bike before purchase
-Looking at the mods on it is there anything else I will need to do to make it totally reliable with the existing work "ie valves, valve springs crank, crank coating etc".

I am of course leaning toward the moded bike as I prefer riding to building.

Thanks for your help. I really want to put one of these in my garage this weekend.

Sounds like the modded bike is a good deal. Have a shop or buddy with experience go over it and see if it has been beat or not. Ask questions as to the history of the bikes. You sound like you know your way around a bike so you should be able to guage the overall condition of it.. Take them for a test run....se which one you like better. Even with the 440 kits, the DRZ's are a really reliable bike.

Wow, that's a tough one Zach.

I just got a brand new DRZ-SM about five months ago. Now, I am fighting the urge to mod it. Reason I got it, was to be an affordable FUN bike that was reliable.

A modded bike is cool too - I agree, it is cool to let someone else spend all the cash modding a bike and then picking it up finished up for cheap.

I guess it sort of depends if you think you NEED a modded bike, or if you value reliability and peace of mind over a good deal. That "good deal" on the modded bike, may just be someone unloading a nightmare time bomb.

I say get the stocker and build it as you like it, when you can.

Get the modded bike or a ktm 530exc. If you get a stocker and expect a rocket youre in for a big dissapointment. I modded my bike with carb and pipe and thought it was cool until, A) I rode my dads ktm530, and B) I went to the track. Ifyou get a stocker you will in the long run spend what you would have spent on a ktm530exc. If you get the modded Drz and it breaks, just fix it. Just my opinion.

Thanks Guys. That is the avice I was hoping for. Bike is a few hours away so I am heading there one evening this week to get the deal done. Turns out bike is owned by the parts manager at a motorcycle shop here in Alberta and was built by a Suzuki mechanic. Hope the snow holds off long enough to get a couple rides on it.

DRZs are great bikes just realize stock they are a little underpowered and overweight as long as the modded bike was done correctly id go for that one

It'd be nice to have the big bore and what not, but then again, the guy obviously DID NOT know what he was doing. Nearly everyone who goes for the bigger carb does the FCR MX 39 mm. I'd be wondering how much of this was done correctly.

If the price is that good...maybe it's TOO good.

Good luck, you'll have fun either way.

I did a wack of searching and I am pretty sure there is no FCR 38. I am going to asume it is a 39 as this guy did not build it. I will chalk it up to typo. Have 2 buddies looking at bike today. Is there an easy way to tell if it is indeed a FCR 39???

It won't say the size on it. You have to measure the manifold opening with a micrometer... I've never heard of an FCR 38 either If you can, post a pic of it here or on TT. Someone will know what the heck it is

Thanks again guys. I bought the moded bike. Rode the hell out of it before it got cold and snowed here. Loved every minute. I am pretty sure it needs some tunig badly. When I let go of the throttle it kinda surges then slows then surges etc to a stop. I am also having trouble geting it to idle nicley and lastly when I have it idling the head pipe just out of the cycinler glows red hot, is that normal?

Sounds like there is an air leak somewhere on your carb. That, or it is running super lean.

Yup, it was lean big time. I bought it in Calgay and I live in Edmonton. There is about a 550' altitude difference as Calgary is right near the mountains. I am kind of suprised the effect the difference had on the carb. Oh well it is good to go now.
