Default Looking for advice in Portland

    Greetings!

Just picked up a 2006 450 SMR with ~15 hours on it.

Bike looks great and runs strong. Could use some advice from local 450 SMR owners about jetting.

I'm running the full 4.1 FMF and clearly the jetting is a little off. It's off in the upper rpm ranges. Anyone have a similar exhaust? What jetting are you running? I'm planning on running out at MAC and Pat's...I'm stoked to get started!

    Cheers!

I'm sure someone will pipe up shortly but FYI - this weekend would be a good time to get some track time and meet like minded people.

MAC track - Sat is practice and Sun is the last supermoto race of the season for Oregon Superbikers - will be very exciting

I'm planning on coming out for the race...sadly I have to work Sat. so no practice for me.

Either way...can't run the bike until I get the jetting sorted...don't want to trash it just yet.

I have the exact same bike, but I'm not going to be much help. I have a stock EXC pipe with a James Dean Jet kit. I order this kit new with every bike I get and never have to mess with it. Including a 2004 450SMR.

The only thing you should check is the sound level. If it's not a stock or quiet series (usually labeled "Q" or "Green") pipe then it might be too loud. See if FMF makes an instert or something to make it quiet. We have a Db meter at the track, but it's easy to tell which bikes are too loud because they hurt your ears when you're behind them. I'd just hate for you to come out racing and get sidelined because your bike is too loud.

Did the seller include the stock system with the sale?

(yes, the 06 SMR came with the quieter EXC pipe. The 04 came with the louder SX pipe, but KTM realized the importance of keeping our sport alive.)

Yes...I do have the stock pipe...was hoping I didn't have to use it...but I guess I might have to.

The FMF isn't ridiculously loud...but you may be right...might be too much. Man...I love the full Ti exhaust!

Apparently it too has a JD jet kit. Not sure what's in it yet...haven't really looked. I'll dig into it over the next couple of days.

I'll definitely be out there Sunday to watch...hopefully I can get some much needed advice to get the bike squared away.

Well if you have the kit and the PO gave you the box with all the little jets and needles you can just call JD and they'll tell you which one will be the best for your bike/pipe set-up. Just don't mix OEM jets and needles.

Both our tracks are such Gems. And our bikes are ridiculously loud the way they are. Supermoto is probably the loudest our bikes will ever perform because you're always WFO. Way louder than in the woods or on the street. We can’t ride at Pat’s during the week because the bikes are too loud. And we’re hanging by a thread with the county having the weekends. So I generally encourage everyone to get a Q series pipe if they want something aftermarket. All it takes is one loud bike one day to really piss off some neighbor and it could all go away in a blink.

A couple years ago when I was on crutches I stopped my truck about a mile away from Pat's Acres, granted it was downwind, but I was amazed at how loud it was. If I lived in the area I'd put up with it, but only because I'm a rider myself. I'm really thankful that the neighbors put up with us the way it is.
