Default I think I've damaged my fuel pump...little help?

I took my fuel tank off the other day and re-installed it today. When I went to start my bike the exhaust popped and bike made a funny noise(hard to discribe but I guess it was the fuel pump or FI system). I looked down and it appears my cold start button was out further than usual(not sure though). I tried to start it without using the cold start button and it started OK but the low fuel light came on even though I've got at least two litres in the tank.

Anyone know what's wrong? How far should the cold start button come out? When I pull it out there's about an inch of the metal thing showing behind the black button. It looks a bit longer but I'm not sure. How much petrol should be in the tank before the reserve light comes on? What was the funny noise when I tried to start with the cold start button out?

I don't know the Huskys, but my guess is that you had some air in the fuel lines that caused the weird starting. Is the fuel level sending unit located in the tank? If so, did you take it out when you had the tank off? Did you reconnect the wires? I once installed a sending unit 180 degrees off and it said that the tank was full when it was actually empty. Just some stuff to think about, hope you get it figured out soon.

The only things I had to disconnect were the fuel pump from the main cabling and the feeding pump from the outlet coupling as per the manual. I reconnected them just as they were connected. I'm concerned I may have damaged the fuel pump though because I've heard they're very sensitive and other people have had problems with theirs. It's a 2008 SM450R by the way.

Any chance the "exhaust pop" was a fuse blowing?

I've had it running since the exhaust popped. I only got the backfire and funny noise from the fuel pump/FI when the cold start button was pulled out. It didn't happen when I started it with the cold start button pushed in.

Did you remove the fuel pump from the tank or just disconnect the fuel lines and electrical connector to remove the tank from the bike?

No I didn't remove the fuel pump from the tank. I just took the tank off the bike like you said. When I took it to the dealer they told me to be really careful putting it back on because I might damage the fuel pump. I'm worried that's what I did because when I tried to start it with the cold start button pulled out it gave a little backfire and then a weird electronic noise that I think was the fuel pump.

My guess is a little throttle was applied when the button was pushed. They sound completely different with a cracked throttle when you try and turn them over. I sometimes need to crack the throttle just a hair to get mine to fire. Fill the tank and ride it. If it runs, then the pump is fine. As for the low fuel lite with 2 liters in the tank....be thankful yours works. Mine doesn't and I ran out on the road yesterday. You may just have a sending unit that slid up on the pump housing. Some do that. There is a fix that was detailed on the site somewhere. Search the Husky forum for fuel pump.

If you had the fuel line disconnected it will need to pressurise again after re-connecting. I usually hit the kill switch a few times to prime the pump and lines after disconnecting...you should hear the pump buzz, that means its working

I have heard about easily damaging the fuel line connections or a elbow in the line but thats it? Dont try and lift the tank too high before disconnecting the line.

why don't you just put some fuel in it and see if the light goes off?

I had this same issue once with the fuel light when my tank was off. It takes the motor/pump running for a few minutes for the reserve fuel light to start working properly. Start it and ride it for a few miles and you will know.
