Default MX vs Street Helmets??? Preferences??

In the market for a new helmet, been wearing an HJC full face for the past 5 years. Now that I am just riding supermoto and the weather is fixing to get nice I am really wanting a nice MX helmet. Should I be ok as long as the MX one I get is Snell & DOT approved??? Or stick to a RR helmet?? What are you guys wearing this season?? BTW I don't like the SM style helmets like the Xd, etc. Thanks

i switch depending on the weather and the type of riding im going to be doing. If its higher speeds i like to stick with my Icon Domain II devil dog and listen to some tunes while i go. If its ALL slow stuff and hot out i will switch to one of my MX helmets. they seems to catch more wind and want to push your head around a bit more. just my 2 cents so take it for what its worth

So is a approved MX helmet safe enough for street riding, or even some road course trackdays???

I thoughts exactly. I like the MX helmets, but at high speeds the wind catches the visor and pushes it back on my head. I also would think that as long as it is dot/snell approved safety would be the same, but not sure.

Dot is Dot!! Dot is what you need on a helmet in the US. I put 20k on my SMC in 16 months with a Bell MX lid. No problems, wind is not so much an issue. I look at birds, planes, boats.....even @75 it is fine. Pull the visor low and keep your head down when you look up your prepared after you wear an MX helmet for a while it just works. That said I just bought a Shoei Hornet, with the face shield it is much quieter and in the winter it is much warmer. With an MX lid you have to cover your face below 50deg. or when it rains. I rode with that Bell at 22 deg and in all manner of storms. Riding a SUMO with a street helmet is gay. The Shoei is the best of both worlds without looking, well you know............

This post got really weird really quick. But anyways, I personally am a fan of the MX lids. I think most helmets these days are DOT so you should be good with whatever you choose. I stick with MX for the summer time. Allows a lot more air in.

I ride with either a Bell MX or Shoei RF 1000 depending on what type of riding I'm doing and the conditions.

If you are so trendy and fashion conscience, maybe you should by a Harley.

My opinion only! MX helmets are for MX bikes, a sumo is an
mx bike with 17" hoops laced to it. I agree with it depending on the weather and temperature. It appears most of the SUMO crowd has come from the sport bike ranks and they wear their street helmet, it's what they have and any DOT lid will work so most don't just go out and buy a new helmet for their new bike. $$$ are definitely a factor for most these days and justifying a new helmet for your style can be spendy. HD??? Never! But could you see a Harley guy wearing a race replica Shoei or a Bell MX helmet! It just wouldn't look right, that is what I was saying.
The new dual style helmets with a visor and face shield are the best of both worlds. Arai XD; Shoei Hornet DS are both upwards of $400. Arioh; Simpson; and the AFX are a little more affordable. If you haven't already check out this: http://www.supermotojunkie.com/showthread.php?t=74466

i wear the mx helemt. Its what i had and what i like, i dont think id ever switch to a full face, imho it looks weird on the sumo.

If you want something warmer for the winter, that looks the same, look into snox helmets. Theyre a little warmer and have things that cover your chin and nose

I have both and switch depending on the weather. I wear MX helmet only when temps are above 70*...

I like the quiet of the full face and the fact i can listen to tunes with it on.

It's a matter of choice i feel. If you feel you are supposed to "look" a certain way when riding, then SMs are not for you... we are the red headed step child of bikers, the outcasts... so, why should anyone adapt to a "look" or style?

Wear what you want and what feels comfortable.

I wear a street helmet. The only reason at the time that I didn't consider an MX helmet is because I wear perscription glasses... Are there goggles out there that would work better with glasses, because the few times I've tried, they fit like ass....

I like street styles for street and MX for off-road. I don't even own an MX helmet these days. Gave my last one away when I sold my CR250.

I wear both, depending on conditions and where I'm riding.

I prefer the MX helmet on the sumo, and I've only tried the MX helmet on the mini.

    Mine is DOT/SNELL certified.

In bad weather, alot of rain gets thru to your face in a MX helmet. The visor also makes things difficult at high speeds. So for high speeds or foul weather, it's the Shoei RF-1000 I have for the gixxer. Most of the time on the DRZ I'm wearing my MX helmet.

I tried the MX and gogles, the peripheral vision sucks. I could not use it on the street to unsafe you cant see whats happening around you. I have the arai hybrid which is cool usually but over 70 it can whip your head around a bit. If your a serious tard run a streetbike helmet. The hybrid is BS cause I would never run that thing on my dirt bike.

I have street, hybrid, and MX/dirt helmets. That's because they all provide different levels of satisfaction, in different applications/situations. Use the right tool for the job: always good advice.

80+ mph with a MX helmet(even with cut down/vented visor) sucks

    theres no pros about it

having said that--sure they look "cool" and cops tend to not really look at you

I wear my MX helmet and goggles. Though I'm thinking of switching to the Arai XD or Shoei Hornet. But I do love my MX/Gog's. No problem with peripheral's....used to it from riding dirt with lots of people around me.

Googles with self tinting...55% to 100%. Not super dark but they do the job.

    1) I have no problem w/80+ mph in an MX helmet. Small adjustments, and it does just fine w/the stock bill.

    2) There are a number of rides where I don't see 80+ mph, or, at least, not for any extended time.

    3) They are much "cooler." Literally, as much more air gets to your head/face.

    4) Some cops look more closely, as they think you're riding an illegal dirtbike on the roadway.

I'm not being an ass, mind you. I just disagree w/your evaluation.

Then, again, to each his/her own. Life is good!

The big plus for MX helmets IMO is the visor for blocking the sun in the early morning and late evening. It's also true that there is more breeze on your face. They're generally a lot lighter than street helmets too. No shield to fog, either. I use my MX helmet for snowmobiling, dirt riding, and street with my SM bike because it works so well.

For me, wind drag on the visor is a problem at higher speeds but I didn't choose a supermoto for high speeds anyway, especially 80+ mph.

I wear a MX helmet on my sled. I wear a balaclava underneath and it's not that cold. I combine that with a no fog nose guard, and it's perfect. We cruise at 75 most of the time and the wind isn't too bad, just have to keep looking slightly down.

no sumo yet, but I can say for sure that I only wear my full face when it's really cold outside (below 10F)

? I live in a small town, and have an orange dirtbike on the street. I have the cops attention regardless of what helmet I wear.

I like the mx helmet most of the time, but high speed, cold, and extended riding isn't for a mx helmet. At extended high speed, the vibrations from my helmet and goggles messes with my vision, and I can tell you I don't like that.

Default a little late but if your thinking of buing a mx helmet.

I have both helmets mx and full face, I used to switch back and forth with the seasons, but then I got a new aria mx helmet and the full face has not come out of its bag in a year. . I found that helmet a goggles work better in almost all seasons, in the winter they don't fog ( as much), and in the summer they are much cooler. Snow is the one condition where goggles can be a bummer as the snow will tend to collect around the frame and over time cut down your view. I should mention that I tend not to do allot of high speed highway riding. I think that more than anything a comfortable helmet that fits right is the most important thing. If you go out a buy a cheap one you most likely will end up not using it, as with my last cheap helmet ( I have a closet full of ill fitting and crappy helmets, including one that melted down on me as I was riding down the highway in AZ. Of all the helmets I have tried the nicest was the Troy Lee, its fit and finish was better than any other mx helmet I have seen. However I ended up with an aria, because it fit my head better that the Troy Lee. You do have do bundle up in cold weather with an mx helmet, I like to do layers, one of the sock that go over your head, and a neck gator in coldest, just the neck gator above 50, and once it gets in to the 60's I ditch both.
P.S. I highly recommend the use of the quickstrap, for goggles.

like wise the self tinting goggles are nice, they never get dark enough, but they get completely clear when its dark out side, and you really don't want dark goggles on. Unless you are going to bring two pairs around with you it is the only way to go. ( I do take two pairs when I trail ride, the back up pair are transition lens too )

I only wear a street helmet, a Shark S800. Since I ride 95% of the time on the street, it's only logical. I feel they offer better protection from wind, rain, and crash.

Full face, unless I am doing serious offroading, then MX. I think I will try one of those hybrid helmets, but not till I need a new one. I don't mind spending money on quality for helmets. Lately, I have been using Arai, excellent for comfort and quality. Used to use Shoe, til I tried an Arai.

Street helmet on the street, MX helmet off road or dual sporting. I find MX helmets way too loud for everyday use on the street.
