Just wondering if anyone could help me with some info on converting a 01 KTM 300exc dirtbike to a motard. Wondering what i actually have to change to have it good to go on the road.
It will only be used to get to work (15km round trip)
Any help would be great.
Thanks
you need to do some homework before just spurting out a random idea. Go to the ktm manufacturers section and there you will find a lot more info.
Also, check out the site a bit more.
I am sure you can go to motostrano.com and get a set of wheels pretty quick. What do you plan on doing? Street? Race? Track days? You really didnt say. You need to figure out exactly what you want before jumping into something.
He said he wanted to know what he needs to get his bike street worthy. Did you read his post? "It will only be used to get to work (15km round trip)"
If your bike has a headlight you can find a blinker kit if you want to go that route. There are tires you can put on your stock rims if you want. Look for 90/90/21 front and a 110/80/19 rear or similar. If you need it street legal email me for info.
Thanks for your help. I dont reallly know a whole lot about motard, that's why im asking on here before i go and spend $1000's on stuff i dont even need.
I've had the bike for a while just thought it might be fun to motard it.
I've sent you an email with a few questions.
Thanks
I have been thinking about doing a track conversion of a newer 300 too. KTM and QTMI have lots of stuff for them. I am not interested in street stuff, so haven't looked into lights, but you probably can get away with 17" rims minimally laced to your stock hubs, and might be able toget away with the stock brakes or a short time. I'd guess most folks here would recommend a big brake kit too.
if your doin this on a budget a big brake kit on standard dirt bike forks is not a good idea being soft for the bush wen you grab a handful of front, your front mud guard nearly hits the road i run the stock brakes on my 09 450 ktm and it stops plenty good enough for the street............ wat part of aust u in mate?
Two strokes do not make good commuters. I have a 440 that I ride off road and on tracks but don't think I would commute on it to much. Too much vibration and it doesn't like steady state cruising. It likes to go (hard) and stop.
A friend had a CR 250 that was tagged for road use and he would ride on the street but he sold it as it was getting old, all the vibration, throttle issues, and bad fuel mileage. If you can and want to do it, good luck and more power to you. While I would like to get my 440 tagged for road use I don't think I would commute on it too much. That is not what it does best.
a 300 ktm aint just any 2stroke mate it will be fine wen there off power band there like a 4stroke lost of engine grunt... she'll be right just might have some plug fouling probs in shit sydney traffic, lane spiltting may help ha,,,,,,, im in newcastle by the way
i never foul plugs on mine and commute on it all the time. It's on or off, but managable. The bike is very light, so run soft pressures in the tires and set the forks and rear spring on the stiffest setting. I have played around with springs and found stock to be the best of all of them.
I am running a 17/38 sprocket setup and a 160 rear.
