Default How to break in a new bike (seating the rings etc...)

    Hi,

Just thought I would see how other people have broken in their bikes from new or if you have installed a big bore kit.

    Many Thanks in advance

I installed a hi compression piston and new rings. Started it and brought it up to temp 3 times(heat cycles) and went racing.

Did you do anything insofar as revving the engine while doing the heating cycle. Have you lost any power as result of breaking the engine in? Thanks in advance.

Just blipping the throttle lightly at first and each cycle getting a little more agressive. Bike gained low end torque but no improvement on lap times. So I consider it money wasted. If I was to do it again I would have just freshened up the motor with rings and spent the savings on a steering stabilizer. BTW it doesn't use any oil between changes but I change it every race weekend which I figure is 70-90 miles total. When heat cycling check the coolant level for leaks and keep a watchful eye for any other leaks. I would change the oil after the heat cycles and if it was spotless I would consider it good to go. About losing power after breaking it in. I would think that as the rings seat you would get a miniscule increase. But that could only be determined on a dyno.

Read the above before you do anything.

When I bought my XR-R new. I uncorked it before I ever started it.

Once uncorked, started it and immediately rode ~2 miles to the base

of a curvy 10 mile mountain road. Hammered it out and back then changed

    the oil.

Runs like a champ 4 years later.

Thanks for that. I tried to email Motoman about the process as I was a little confused about the process. Do you know whether I am supposed to be shifting through the gears high rpm on each then decelerate or go through each gear then decelerate i.e. high rpm 2nd gear then decelerate, shift to 3rd, get to high rpm then decelerate etc...?

Just warm it up and ride it ~20 miles as if you are going for a "spirited"

    canyon ride.

Not really race track hard, but don't be afraid of full throttle and running

it 3/4s of the way to redline. Downshift into corners as you normally would.

Good stuff there. I never did follow the OEM's guide for a new motor. That is total bunk to think you should ride the way it says to break in a new engine. Ive built a few motors in my life and i always break em in right!
