    Hi,

Just thought I would see how other people have broken in their bikes from new or if you have installed a big bore kit.

    Many Thanks in advance

I think the norm is as the book suggests. 3 runs 20 min 3/4 throttle with cool down between and then let it rip. I do know some racers that run it hard up front and say the rings seat sooner and better due to load on the rings but I do not subscribe to that approach. I do have a side by side comparison from 2 Yamaha 650 turbo bikes back in 82. I broke my bike in for 1000 miles while my bud tore his up 1st. day. At 40,000 miles my bike was starting to loosen up and run like mad and his was almost worn out. And I thrashed my bike after break in.

Thanks for letting me kow. So with the 3 runs of 20min do you hold it at 3/4 throttle or do you back it off before doing another 3/4 throttle run. Also do you warm the bike up first?

Run it like you normally ride it & just change your oil after 100 miles .

Reason is a bike seats rather quickly, & change the oil so soon, because what ever debri becomes available will be from the initial running of the bike.

I never had a bike wear out sooner because of a ride it like your going to ride it, vs the manuel procedure.
(besides that procedure is for liability reasons for "IF" there was an error in manu that your not hauling ass & the failure aids in you crashing or worse, killing yourself)

I've only had bikes blow up or wear out sooner because I abused them beyond what they were designed for, not from break in procedures.

Your bike, do it how you feel best, or safe with.
but if it will help, Google off the line test procedures from the M/C factories (they hold throttles wide open unloaded for 15 to 30 seconds ).

I think the break in that i spoke of is more for bearing surface longevity than anything else. Like anything, ask and you will get as many different procedures as there are replies.

Running it gently for the first few sessions will not harm anything but beating it like hell will. There is too much debris in the oil during that period to run it hard without doing any damage. Unless you change the oil every lap, your new motor sheds for a bit and will contiue to shed, get that out of the way before you go at it too hard.

As far as I am concerned the "hard break in" was like one of those viral videos, one guy posted it on a racer website and the whole world took it as the cure to cancer.

I'll take concentional wisdom over a fad diet any day.
