Default Threaded plug in fuel tank came out...little help?

I was taking the side panels and fuel tank of my bike today for the first time. It's a Husky SM450R. The plastic side panels screw into the fuel tank. There are threaded plugs that the screws screw into on each side of the plastic fuel tank. One of the plugs came out with the screw. The plug was stuck into the hole in the side of the tank with a sticky black goo with the consistency of melted rubber. I have to glue the plug back in to screw the side panel back on.

Anyone know what this sticky black goo is and where I can get some? Or what else I could glue the plug back in with? I'm not sure what to use because I thought superglue might react with the plastic fuel tank or something. It might be too brittle too.

That sounds like the butyl tape that I used to use to install windows on aluminum boats. It is used by glazers in houses and on cars, so you should be able to find some locally if you ask around. It usually comes in rolls, so if you find a supplier, ask for a 4" "sample", and see how it works.

I've done a little research and I think you're right. It is butyl tape. Thanks.
