    Default Opening the airbox

How exactly do I open up the airbox on the wr250x? Are there any downsides? I've heard things like not riding in the rain, and such...

And do you guys recommend it?

    Thanks,

    Luiz

Depends on who you talk to. Personally I would not recommend it. You will get water in there when you wash the bike and ride in heavy rain. Open the flapper and pin it down, and you will have plenty of air. Do you have any other mods like exhaust or a programmer? If not, you are not gaining anything by opening the airbox. What they mean by opening it is to drill out the rivets on the top section and remove it entirely. This leave nowhere for the water to drain except into the big gaping hole you just created, instead of letting it run around the raised horn section that is there now. Others will argue my point I'm sure, but that is my 2 cents.

Yamatech, maybe you can help me out...

I love motorcycles, and always have, but there's a lot I don't know about them. For example, you just asked if I have a programmer... I don't have a clue what that is.

I love to understand things like how the motor runs, I'm an engineering student, and motorcycles especially I'm very interested in... But I just haven't got that much hands on a motorcycle to understand everything about it..... You know?

Well you have come to the right place. This forum will help you underatnd this bike. You may also want to cruise the other forums like ADVrider, ThumperTalk and the new WR250R/X Forum.

A programmer is an add on black box of sorts. It is used for performance tuning of the fuel injection system. If you don't have one and you still have the stock exhaust system, I would say you are wasting your time opening the air box. Although some have claimed a power increase by removing the spark arrestor from the exhaust and opening the airbox. These are cheap mods and don't cost anything. If you want to try something like this, it is easily reversible. Just remove the spark arrestor and take off the door of the airbox and go for a ride.

I opened my airbox and it is easily reversible if I need to ride in water or sand. The side panel(airbox door) underneath the right hand side "number plate" that swings open on 2 hinges, all you have to do is just pop the c-clips off that hold the hinges on,then slide both hinges out and the door is off.I also used a single small self tapping screw to hold down the flapper open on top of the airbox under the seat.

So, I'm just back from the garage. Unfortunately, it's the building garage, and I think my neighbors are pretty unhappy with me at the moment.

I took the spark arrestor off, and took it for a spin. It is embarrasingly loud! Now I think I did something wrong... I took the tip out, then I removed that entire piece, with the spark arrestor, and the little tail pipe, then I put the tip back on. I feel like the little tail pipe should have stayed, but it was welded to the spark arrestor.

Does it sound like I did something wrong?

    Thanks,

The spark arrester is one piece. It comes out with the tip. If you think removing it is loud, you should try an FMF Powercore muffler. That thing is obnoxious! I love it

I've got the stock muffler so I just disconnect the actuator in the top of the airbox and plugged the vacuum hose. Then I just turned the actuator and it popped out. I now have the flap pinned down and a 1-1/2 inch hole in the top of the airbox where the actuator came out. That should help the breathing a little. Will let you know how it runs tomorrow.
