Shifting A KLX110 Auto Clutch

My son races a klx 110 (with Crower mods) that has the stock auto clutch but with the 4speed shift drum. I've ridden bikes all my life but rarely with an auto clutch. My question is what is the best way to shift the bike, I am trying to show my Ian the best way but I am only guessing. When I ride the bike I just keep it wide open and yank the shifter up. My son however has trouble getting it to go into gear if he doesn't shut off the gas and it seems to lose him a lot of time. He only weighs 65lb so I'm thinking he doesn't have enough muscle to power shift as I showed him.

Any body have any ideas? This is the first time I have been involved with mini's so any help or suggsestions would be appreciated.

Hey John, River has that problem too....i thought about welding a foot stomp pad on the rear of the shifter sort of like an old honda trail or passport scooter so they could heel stomp the upshifts.....i dont know if it would be too much to remember though and other than a manual weld fix or shifter mod i dont know of anything you could do internally....nothin wrong with a lil blip of the throttle though...thats what River does now.....what about a bigboy daddy longer shifter with more leverage?

I never "powershift" it. Rev it out, off the gas for a second, upshift. Just like a normal bike with a clutch, but no clutch.

If Crower put in HD clutch springs it will be alot harder to shift, like twice as hard or more.

Chachi, I like the sound of the foot stomp thing. I'll see what I can come up with.

FBG, I don't personally power shift my own full size race bikes but I have to on the 110. The reason for this is that as soon as you back off the gas even just a blip, it feels like you are going to pitch over the bars due to the sudden decel. Crower did indeed fit the HD clutch springs.

We will just practice until we can get to an acceptable point. I am also thinking about a manual clutch but Ian has to have all A's and B's on his next school report card first.

Thanks.

I would investigate going back to stock springs, at least 50/50 stock/HD.

I'll post up this problem on my other favorite website to try and find out if this is normal, dosen't sound like it.

Manual will help with the decel braking, make sure it's a true manual not just a semi-auto like some mini setups. I don't think it'll make him faster in SM but will be a great training tool for the bigger bikes.

Yep he needs to got used to a manual clutch for when he moves up to an 85 anyway. What's this true manual and semi-auto deal? I have seen the hydraulic clutches advertised and now I am seeing a cable type. Do you know anything about these two.

with the klx110 i had i was able to aplly a little bit of pressure to the shifter either way to a point where it would no longer engage and when doing this i was able to blip the throttle to rpm match on downshift or even rev it out of corners, just keep the pressure to the point of slipage and just release to engage. i would also recommend adding the 4th gear offset shift drum, worked great. worked great for me. i prefered doing this with stock springs in the clutch it just felt better to me.

ok...... for the kid, leave the stock auto clutch in place, add in the manual clutch set up, hydraulic or cable. the hydraulic will be MUCH easier for a kid to pull in vs. the cable. this will allow him to slip the clutch in and out while shifting BUT still giving him the freedom to auto clutch it. NOW it doesnt really work like an auto clutch anymore per say, off the starting line. he wont be able to be in neutral theen shift up into 1st and not go anywhere, he'll have to have the clutch pulled in still. so you do get still a 50/50 system. for learning purposes, it will work great for the kids. the faster he gets on the KLX, you can go ahead and actually remove all of the stock auto clutch components off the crankshaft and get the motor to spool up faster.
