Inexpensive Tube Frame Slider Option

So... I was looking for a cheap way to protect my water pump and cases... The thing about big bore thumpers is that... well, they are big motors and combining that with the fact that there is nowhere to bolt a slider on the motor mounts, you have to get creative.

Let's see if you guys can put 2 and 2 together...

Fact: 1-1/8" = 1.125"; Lower bar on Baghira & Mastiff measures 1.119" diameter

Fat bar 1-1/8" risers for dirt bike... Mmmm hmmmmm cheap. If yours are bigger you can shave a bit but these work perfect for me. If your bar is smaller purchase a 7/8" bar riser or use shims.

Good thing is ths bolt is replaceable in case it gets damaged in a crash...

Just purchase Delrin sliders from whatever bike... I'm using ones from my girls yzf600r I'm selling... Here are some example pics guys... I've decided how I'm going to rock them but it's pretty versatile what you can do with them...

I am planning to cut them a little bit to get them to be about a little over 5mm past flush from the w/p and cases... but you get the idea.

That looks like your providing a fixed lateral impact point where there is not supposed to be one for side impact, and a nice long leverage point from the front. I think it would save your case on a mild low side and probably bend your frame on the way to breaking your case with an instance of more violent impact from 90 degree hit. (There's not a lot of clearence left there.)

In the case of just catching something low hanging while moving forward in a straight line, I think it would definitely tweak the frame. Based on the relatively thin width of the riser and sharp edge...I see a small home made pipe bender. I guess it will depend on if you are going to run them straight out or in the safer raised position.

I'm going to be running them tilted up... Sticking out they are just too prone to drag and catch something. And like a lot of you said... They will just rotate up anyway.

straight out is a bad idea....:headshake

tilted up into the case is how i would run them...
Yep.

I think your wasting your time and money. HAve you layed the bike over by hand to see if the cases even hit? Cant think of a single crash iv heard of a bike having road rashed cases the handlebars and pegs keep them away from the ground. Only thing iv seen is like on the DRZ's the shifter breaking the cover but there are protectors for those bikes usually.

Get some decent peg sliders and bar end sliders and be done, probably cheaper too.

I already have peg sliders and hand guards... So i guess thats good. If u understood how far this motor and water pump poked out you would understand why I'm making the efforts. Ill check when i get in the garage. These cases and w/p are unfortunately a little more difficult to attain than your normal jap bike :( I'd rather be safe than sorry.

It's stuff I had laying around so it's not too bad of a financial burden, thankfully. Thanks for the input, Z.

I like where your heads at but that just looks way too sketch. For all the reasons everyone else already mentioned. Running them up, already on the case would be the better of the two evils but a decent impact and your sliders will be going through your case or best case they bend your frame.

Looks like a good effort Meeners! I would worry about tweaking the frame though. Do they make a skidplate for that bike? Then install the slider off the skidplate? Work will be getting slow for me in the next week so we can build you a skidplate if needed. I still have 3 or 4 feet of 2" dia UHMW stock if you need some more slider material.

Also Comet tonight?

FK this frame! I ain't skurred... its steel and tube frame. I'm actually more worried about the cases as they are hard to find. They make a skid plate but its' really expensive and extra ugly. They do make one for the xt660 that's sweet. It's expensive too but it's worth it.

Dude, I'd love to build a skid plate! I might have missed your open time but I'll holler :)

I ran them like this to protect the cases...
