Bad things are happening inside my 690, going by noise and metal flakes in the oil. The bike has 30K miles on it now, and I've always been careful to change oil every 2K miles and keep up with valve checks/adjustments. I'm thinking crank or rod bearing, but I'll start with clutch and top end during the tear-down. I've been told that the older ones are a PITA so I'm wondering if any improvements were made in serviceability.

Here are a few things worth mentioning: (1) The rocker arm roller bearings are fine, but (2) the valve clearances were huge this time when I checked yesterday, as in up to 0.61 mm on the intake. I just checked and reshimmed these 6K miles ago so I'm really suspicious about this. I am certain that I am doing the valve clearances correctly too. Another bit of evidence that points toward top end is that the bike has been stalling recently, as in as soon as I noticed a noise developing. Many times after coming to an idle, cracking the throttle open again stalled the engine. I'm sort of hoping that my problem is on the top end, maybe a cam bearing.

I'll keep you posted on this situation since others are going to start facing wear-related issues with their 690s too.

Has anyone taken one of these engines apart yet?

Ha I'm new to street riding in general; my first street riding experience was on this WR400F I picked up about a month and a half ago. I tested it out before buying, loved it, bought it, a week later I got my moto permit, tagged it, and have been loving it since.
I have been riding motocross since I was 4 yrs old, so 16 yrs, and I love motorcycles. I came across info on supermoto, started searching, and I found this bike on craigslist and am extremely happy with the purchase. I look forward to using this forum for all my supermoto-related stuff.
Now, that said, I need some local sumo riders to go ride with!:bike:

Let me start off by saying this is NOT my project. But if it happens, I will end up doing most of the work.

So a supermoto friend of mine, talked one of his friends into buying a supermoto. He scored a CLEAN af (not sure what year) wr250f. Titled, converted, marchesinis, big brake, bunch of goodies, exhaust, tt vapor, spare plastics... Cheap too. $3k. Well, I don't know what he did, but it quit running, and my insiders at the shop he took it to said the motor was effed. Not quite sure If it's top end, bottom, whatever.

Now me being me, I have a few friends looking for Motos. I've got him down pretty far on the non running bike for this other buddy of mine. But his hang up is he races a 11yz450 and refuses to ride a 250.

So, will a 07-11 450 motor drop right in with minor fab work? I see 225 is parting his out. Where the headstay on the frame mounts looks a little different according to just eyeballing the phish. So my 2 concerns are just will it be relatively straight forward as far as getting it bolted in, and how much of the wiring do you think would plug right in?
08 Wr450 frame part #: 5TJ-21101-E0-00
08 wr250 frame part #: 5UM-21101-E0-00

Maybe some of you guys know what the different parts of the part number mean.

Ok, discuss.
